Maps
Are the big Michelin type maps necessary for traveling in South America? Is it foolish to ask if using "Mapquest" on-line maps a possibility. I like the simplicity of the on-line maps but if you tell me that I'll get hopelessly lost using them. . . thanks for the advice.

Best maps that I know are the ones from AAA, they are very accurate and cheap.

hmmmm
I've contacted the AAA (assuming there is only one AAA) and I'm told that Mexico and the Carribean are the only maps they have outside of the U.S.

It's not very good. Honestly, I rely more heavily on the individual country maps in Lonely Planet's "Central America on a Shoestring". I was spoiled by the level of detail in Bicimapas' GPS maps for Mexico. Now I'm pretty much stuck to major highways. Jeff |

MultiMaps
Is anyone familiar with Multimaps? On-line service similar to Mapquest. They appear to have more detail.
Thanks |

I used 'Rough Guide' maps for South and Central America. Have currently been using them for Thailand, Nepal and India. They have good level of detail and importantly are plastic so they don't rip like crappy paper maps do after about 5 minutes.

For the southern half of south America I found a great magazine sized road atlas on a newstand in Salta Argentina called "Atlas de Rutas" , published by Firestone. I was told that Toyota does a good South America atlas as well, but I could never find one.
