Lost all my Documents and wallet on the RTA 40

Probably a bit late for most people who have already riden north, but yesterday I lost my bag with my wallet, passport and all my documents for the bike. I rode 200 miles and back looking for it with no avail.

It was full of cash too so ill probably never see it again but if anyone comes accross it on the Routa 40 between Tres Largos and Perito Morreno, please contact me !!

I have just about enough cash to get me back to bsas to get a new passport and a new debit card..

:(

Bad luck mate.

Ted, Ted, Ted. The First Rule of Travel: Keep you passport and money on your body at all times. I even consider what a friend does as prudent. He has a small waterproof Kathmandu document pouch and takes the important stuff into the shower with him. I'm not that careful, but I use a money belt, AND a neck pouch.
I hope your docs turn up.

Enjoying your blog too, thanks for the efforts.

Kind regards

contact if needed

Ted, if you need us to contact your embassy/ consul or immigration here in Buenos Aires regarding your lost documents, no problem. Just advise what we can do.

Many years ago, pre ATMs, I lost my cash deep in Mexico on a Costa Rica to California ride and I managed to trade tools etc for gas, cook and clean up restaurants for food and sleep, with my bike tied to my leg, with the locals helping to carry their goods to market. It was truly amazing the number of Mexican baskets and handicrafts my little Honda could carry.

Actually, having no money for about three weeks was the best part of the ride. xfiltrate

I know.. im such a fooking idiot at times !

I always , always , always carry my cash, debit card and passport in a money belt which never leaves my body.. This ONE and ONLY day I packed up late and stuffed the money belt into my bum bag with my documents..

I only had my documents in my bum bag because I crossed the border from Chile into Argentina the same morning, i usually have them locked in the bike.....

Any other day i would of only lost my camera, map and notebook.. Its bloody typical that all my eggs were in one basket the one day the basket went missing...

luckily,I had credit cards seperately hidden on the bike which has been my life line and I had 200 pesos in cash in my day wallet which was just enough to get fuel for the ride to a major town where i could use my credit cards to ge cash (with huge charges mind)..

So, iv reported my stuff missing to the police, got cash and now im heading BACK to bsas to get a new passport and a new tempory import...

Now, i also lost my international driving licience and genuine UK driving licience... I can get a new licience from the DVLA, but international one ????? post office job isnt it :(

Yup. It's always the one time.... Well, good news is it probably won't happen again.
I've never needed/used an international driver's licence. I have one, but when they ask for a licence (which is rarely) just hand them the one from Arizona, and it works just fine. I wouldn't waste your time/energy on this one.
Good luck!

Lessons for others

So sorry about the lose of your documents and hassle that awaits you. We all get caresless sometimes - It is easy to so when you want to hit the road and your sick of packing, unpacking, packing, etc.

I keep orignials on my body (around my neck), I have two copies of all documents (1 hidden. 1 accessible) and a memory stick with all my docuements scanned.

Good luck

Hi Ted,

bloody hell mate!

Sorry you've had some bad luck and hope you get sorted out easily.

I've only been checking up on your website and didn't think about looking for updates here.

Let me know if there's anything we can do at this end.

Reggie
