Long term storage solution in montevideo uruguay

Hi People, I've just put my moto in storage with Kevin who's dad has a motorcycle shop in Montevideo and employs several mechanics who are going to do a few jobs on my bike while I am back in Scotland. The shop is also worth a visit just to see the collection of motos including a beast with a 6,000cc US muscle car engine squeezed in it's frame and as Kevin's dad appears to be the local agent for Royal Enfield some new US standard thumpers. In addition, Kevin and his dad have both done some good bike trips in South America so they are kindred spirits.

The advantages of storing in Montevideo as I see it are:

1.You can get a 1year Temp Import for your bike if you enter Uruguay by road.

2.It's cheaper than B.A. even when you take into account the cost of getting to and back from B.A. if like me you intend to fly home from B.A.

3.If you decide to store in Montevideo and have the time, Uruguay is quite magic especially when you get into Gaucho land i.e 15ks in from the coast and in the summer if you get sick of lassoing cattle, head back to the coast to gaze at acres of young bronzed (I hate them) scantily clad males and females (select one or both this is a prejudice free web site) and do some more rounding up although branding in most cases is not advised.

This is good news, I wonder how much room they have for bikes? I'm needed to ditch my ride for a few months and I'm thinking Uruguay is the spot for me at the moment.
Do you have to ask for the 1 years worth of import at the border or is it just given automatically?

I believe you have to enter Uruguay by road rather than on the ferry and ask at the Aduana, in my experience it is given without question. As to space, I reckon Kevin could take about 8 bikes in the warehouse as it stands but an e-mail should clear up any Q's. I hope to pick up my bike about the 5th Sep. so that will free up 1 space. Ride safe.

Update on Motorcycle storagein Uruguay

I recently picked up my bike from Willi Motos (Kevin's dad's shop). The bike was just as we left it in March 2014 (now Nov 2014). The bikes are actually stored in a separate facility from the bike shop with a partner of Willi's. His name is Ernesto. The luggage is stored at Willi's up on a mezzanine level. I talked with Ernesto directly and he said he had 18 bikes currently and has room for more.

Uruguay allows for 12 months of temporary import at no cost. This makes is a no hassle process at the border. MVD also has an int'l airport and flying from Calgary Canada via Houston/Panama was and easy although long process.

I was bringing spare parts and new tires from Canada and they tried to hit me up for taxes in MVD. I told them I was replacing worn out parts and would be leaving the country in two days. They let me go without any payment of taxes.

If you are thinking of storing a bike in South America, strongly consider Willi Motos. If you are Canadian he likes Maple syrup.

I confirm the information about Kevin
we are French and we left 2 times our 1200 BMW gs with Kevin and Ernesto.
We were very happy, the bike was perfectly monitored (maintains battery ..) for our return the bike was drained,
happiness!
Ernesto loves the French red wine (Pinot Noir)!!

Long term parking Uruguay

Hi folks,
I park my bike the second time with www.uy-storage.com
The bikes are stored in climated containers, so no salty air will touch my bike like in Montevideo.
Have a look and decide for the better solution!

Have a good trip.
Jack

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
