Libretta - how much, and is it worth it?

Hi guys

Hope you'll be able to help. A mate and I are biking LA - Buenos Aires this year.

Does anyone know how much a libretta (sp?) costs for a motorbike (xt600e worth ~£3000)? I can't find the costs anywhere at all on the web - argh!

Secondly - is it worth getting a libretta? From what I've read, you can get by without one?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Cheers

Matt

Dunno where you got libretta from - may be thinking of a carnet, but as noted ad nauseum on the HUBB, you don't need one for the Americas.

All paper can be taken care of at the borders when neeeded.

See you at the UK Meeting in June!

In the past, we have heard of a "libretta" being a South American equivalent of a carnet, issued in Venezuela! Wouldn't bother. A carnet is not technically required in South America - Ecuador can be a pain without it, as rules have only recently changed, but if you have plenty of time and patience, then it can be sorted.

A follow up to the post from Kevin & Julia "Globebusters" regarding the libreta.

I can confirm this document is the equivalent to the carnet in South America & is issued only be the national motoring clubs who form FITAC (Federacion Interamericana de Touring y Automovil Clubes). There used to be a summary of the document on their website, but seems to have been moved/deleted ?

RAC continues to get mixed feedback on use of the carnet in South America. As stated by Grant & Globebusters, it is possible to transit without one !

However, if a carnet is used to enter a country, you should ensure you exit that country before carnet expiry. Peruvian Customs impounded Richard Heaphys' bike last August in these circumstances.
