Leaving vehicle in Ecuador or Peru

Yes the old question, is it possible in Ecuador or Peru or elsewhere to leave the vehicle and take a flight out, later return, then continue the journey?
How long ??? Thanks ;-)

Your entrance permit tells you how long you can leave legally your vehicule in the country. As long as you dont have the motorcycle stamped in your passport, you can leave the country without the vehicule.

As far as I know, only venezuela stamps it in your passport.

Hi Folks,
We've had quite a few threads recently about leaving the bike in various different countries. As I understand it, you get a temporary import certificate when you enter a country and the bike is fine for the duration of this certificate.
Does anyone know what the penalties are for overstaying? Is it just a slap on the wrist or can you get into big trouble?

Thanks,
Duncan.

Your vehicule will be considered as imported, and as a matter of fact, you ll have to pay import taxes (in average 40% of the listed value, including vat)

If you go to the border with a low profile, explaining the reasons of the overstay, you might get "a slap on the wrist", but you will entirely depend on the mood of the local customs administration officer. I overstayed two month in Argentina 3 years ago, got fined 20 pesos, not even the cost of the loads of paper they had to do...I could prove i was a traveller and i could blame the guy who checked the entrance for giving me only 3 month while i asked for 8 month (legal maximum). I heard about stories of travellers with RVs that had to pay thousands of dollars.

I flew out of Caracas just last week with a motobike stamped in my passport with no problems:thumbup1:

They gave me 90 days temporary import and I was out and back before it was expired.

I left my bike in Colombia for nearly 8 months over the this and last year and did a little work on the papers and got out of Colombia to Ecuador for a few weeks for some fresh papers and then back into Colombia again and onto Venezuela with no problems either.

Colombia has got to be one of the best bets if you really have to leave a bike for a long time. The computers the DIAN are using must not be linked well enough at this point to keep track of a tourist's bike. If not wanting to bring that bike back to Colombia it would be easy enough to just leave the country out of Ipiales or into Venezuela out of Cucata without turning in your expired paperwork but then it would/should/may not be possible to bring that same motorbike back into the country again.

Hi,

For me it was a nightmare to get al the papers done to enter Venezuela with my bike but in Ecuador they did not register my bike at all so i could have easily left or even sold it there.

In Peru they did not know how to export my bike so in theory it is still in the country.
