Latest security info for Colombian Routes 45 & 24
 

Hello
My partner and I (on two bikes) will be leaving Bogota soon to ride to Ecuador. We want to use routes 45 and 24 to get from Bogota to Popayan, and then from there to the border on the Interamericana.

A Colombian friend of mine has told me that the area around San Agustin is currently not secure due to guerilla activity and the recent assasination of the FARC leader in the hills near there. He has said that this includes the above routes (45 and 24).

Does anyone out there have any additional information? Has anyone travelled this route recently? Are there any other internet resources available to assess the risk of using this route?

Hi there!

I have been talking with people in Medellin, and they told me that it should be ok to travel that area. I am in Manizales now, thinking which road to use to Ecuador.

It would be great to visit San Augustin area! So, I am going to talk with other people that may know more about that route..

Thanks for the reply... i think we are leaning towards the San Agustin route, but will ask locals for advice as we head south. Please do let us know if you get more updates. Likewise, if we get any news on this subject we will post it here.

From what i heard, the roads between Manizales and Bogota are not in the best shape right now, either... you may have a tough time getting over to this side of the mountains because of all the landslides!.
