Is this a good idea?

Having traveled from Missouri to Panama I now want to spent about a month in S.A. I primarily would like to see Iguazu Falls and Lake Titicacca and Machu Picchu. My tentative plan is to rent a moto in Buenos Aires and ride north to Iguazu and then on west to Chile and north to Peru. Cost of rental for a month would be about $1400 less than shipping my bike. With the rental agent (motocare) providing paperwork for border crossing this seems like a good plan. I wonder if I'm missing anything. I haven't read anything about anyone doing this. Any advice?

I have, sort of....

Bob,

I did something similar this summer w/ my 17 yr old son. Around the Block 2007 | We "rented" motos in Peru and traveled to Brazil (as far as Foz) and returned via Bolivia. Our mistake was to just write up our own rental contract with a lawyer (who of course had never done similar before) which worked until we got to the Arg border at Foz where they would not let us cross due to the fact that the agreement did not mention traveling IN Argentina! We were crossing from Brazil to Argentina only 2 days after Argentina had lost the Copa America to Brazil, so I'm sure that didn't help.

Our original intent was to cross Argentina from Foz to Salta, then over the Paso de Jama to the coast of Chile and back north. But that problem caused us to return via Bolivia which was GREAT! and CHEAP. So all's well that ends well.....

Thanks for the response

Reading your blog was great and the photos as well! I think renting with advanced paperwork sounds good for those of us planning an S.A only trip. Thanks again.

One thing, get yourself vaccinated against yellow fever, you will be close to/crossing Paraguay, I believe there may be an epidemic there.
Cheers

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
