Irish Team in the Dakar Rally

HI Folks

we are a small group of crack pot Irish going to have a go at the Dakar Rally. We are the first ever Irish team to do it and we are hoping to meet up with as many Irish , or Irish connected people as we can in Argentina and Chile.
we are desperately short of Cash and are trying to get a 4X4 vechicle in Buenos Aires to use as our liaison vehicle and we would even welcome a place to kip for a few nights at the start of the rally.

most important is to get as many people as we can together to cheer on the Irish team.
looking forward to hearing from anyone interested

Gary

Surely you are not talking about the 2010 Dakar? If so, I think you will find registration closes around 1st November 2009, then you still need a 4x4! Good luck in whatever you are planning, but you appear to be leaving everything till the last minute, BTW, was there not a CCM mounted Irish team entered in the African Dakar a few years back?

hi. we have already entered the team and have a lot of stuff in place and just a few loose ends to be tightened up.
we checked on the ccm entry and were told that it was just an individual entry not a team ... ?
we have done a good bit of work with the Charity here , Simon also

All the very best with the race, hopefully you will post the team names and riding numbers as soon as you have them so we can follow your progress via the tracking system.

Here come the Irish - THE FOUR LEAF ROVERS

GARY....This is indeed breaking news. The first Irish team to compete in the Dakar Rally with a support vehicle full of Guiness driven by a raven haired Irish lass I hope.

As far as credentials, for years I had an Irish-Cherokee girlfriend, she was, like many other Irish-American beauties abducted by aliens. They certainly have good taste in women. Opps, sorry can I have another Guinnes?

And if having an Irish-Cherokee girlfriend doesn't qualify me.... my Italian Grandfather owned a construction company, in Philadelphia, with the Irish Father of famous Irish American actress Grace Kelly.

Anyway, Elisa and I live in Buenos Aires, in Palermo Hollywood, the barrio where hundreds of Argentine actors, directors and other such folks live. Palermo Hollywood is very close to La Rual where the Darker was staged earlier this year. The 2009 rally actually began in Saladillo, not in Buenos Aires.

For a few Guiness, I will hit as many Irish pubs, and there are many, as in everywhere... in Buenos Aires, and pass the word to all the Irish and Irish lovers I meet, that the Irish team will be competing in the Dakar. And, if you e-mail me a poster of your team, I will print copies and post them in all the Irish pubs I find. Maybe some of these pubs will sponsor you...

To impress everyone I'll let slip out my substantial credentials. oh yeah, I'm sure every one will be impressed. Right?

Also, you can google Irish Pubs in Buenos Aires and contact the pubs directly for support and to get the word out.

Don't forget to contact the Irish embassy here, diplomats love cultural events, they get extra travel money and per diem to participate in cultural events.

Also, find any Irish products/services being sold in Argentina, contact these Irish Argentine companies and offer them sponsorships. I might be able to help here too.

And, if you will allow www.Xfiltrate.com - Professional Motorcycle Parking (professional motorcycle parking in Buenos Aires) would love to be one of your sponsors, perhaps not with a bundle of bucks, but with good will and a promise to do all we can to help you find more funding.

As I said, we live very near the Dakar action, and will probably follow the 2010 Dakar on our motorcycles, and we will cheer you on.

I was thinking of a slogan for you, how about "The Irish are Coming" nah, that is too sexually oriented, how about "FOUR LEAF ROVERS" instead of "four leaf clovers" in spanish the closest we could come up with is "EL DAKAR DE CUARTO HOJAS". CHEERS

Lift a pint for us.

And don't forget lads if ye're in Buenos Aires before christmas the Ireland All-Star hurling team has an exhibition match, dates yet to be announced, but between the 15th and the 20th I think.
Best of luck in the rally, may see ye at the start, if I get up in time...!

Sorry there 5 Eyes, that Irish All Stars Hurling game is not on 15th-20th like I thought, announced 12th of December, but if ye-re around preparing for the rally will give ye some moral support. Best of luck in the rally. IronArse, formerly Jagermini

5 Eyes,
I'm just back from a quick Dublin-Dakar bike spin and was wandering around these S & C America pages wondering if I could do a Pan American trip with the family (no not on the bike).

I've kept my Eurosport subscription just so I could watch the Dakar this Jan and will be watching much more closely now.

The very best of luck.

Ian

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
