necessary documents???

I am going to be riding in South America, primarily Chile and Argentina, and am planning on purchasing my bike down there. I wish to know what all documents I am going to need in order to make it legal for me to ride in multiple countries. I've heard of "needing" a carnet in order to cross borders... What is this and how would I get it. Also, what kind of licensing is necessary. I can ride well, but the paperwork for my license in the U.S got messed up so on my international permit I do not have the motorcycle stamp. Is this a problem?? Can i do somehting about it in Chile or Argentina that would make me legal?? Also, am I going to need to get some type of insurance and where should I look for it. I am planning on buying my bike in Santiago, and am looking for advice of where to look, and who is reliable. Any and all help anyone can give me would help tremedously. Thanks

Thumbs up search the hubb

There are plenty of tips here to get all the data you need.
Look for the Santiago community and ask them by mail.
Good luck

Hey there
I just rode through argentina, chile, bolivia, peru, ecuador and colombia, and all you need is ownership card (license) on your name, passport and that's it! Don't need a carnet de voyage in south america, i didn`t even have a riders license. My california car drivers license was always enough, there is not one single cop in SA that speaks english, so practically any foreign license will do. I was never asked for international license, and only in colombia they asked for a license at the border xing.
If buying a bike down there you need to think what to do with it afterwards, selling a foreign bike is an issue in most countries.
have fun,

pajaro

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
