Insurance Ecuador

Is it true you don't need insurance in Ecuador
The customs in Ipiales said it is obligatory, buy it in Tulcan..
Then in Tulcan nobody would sell insurance on a foreign registered car
4 police said we would not need insurance

Still I am unsure
What is true guys pls...

Kind Regards
Manfred, in Quito

I went there and didn't have any insurance. I also asked and they would only sell for 6 months.... so I didn't bother.

Just make sure to have in Peru, or at least something that will get the cops out of your back. I looked around and just found a 3 months liability only, so good luck.

I am from Canada, so I showed my papers, at the first time I was stopped, and told him that my BC insurance was valid there and it was $ 2 millions, he was impressed and let me go!

Good luck

Joca

Just came into Ecuador, weren't given stamps to enter the country until had bought insurance. Available at the border (when the computers are working), I had to go into the nearest town to buy, at a bank, and paid $8 for a month.

I don't remember how much I paid, I think it was something around 25 usd for a year. Police would ask you for insurance if you are envolved in an accident otherwise the only documents they are happy seeing are Driving Licence and Temporary Import Permit. Maybe the situation has changed regarding the entry procedure but nobody asked me to buy insurance before they stamp my passport or give me a permit for the bike. I went to a bank voluntarily and got he insurance done.

Hey Folks,
How about insurance for Peru and Columbia? I'm due to cross into Peru in the next few days and would much rather be insured than uninsured.
I got green card insurance from ATM in Buenos Aires that covered neighbouring countries but Peru, Ecuador and Columbia aren't included. It's due to expire quite soon anyway.

Dunc.

Insurance Equador

Got it today at SOAT in Quito for my Chevy van, a month for 5.65USD ;-)

Duncan

I bought my insurance from ATM in BsAs too.
You got me worried so I got the papers out - it clearly states that it covers whilst in:
Paraguay, Uraguay, Brasil, Bolivia, Chile, Peru.

They even give contact details in each of those countries.

I would be surprised if yours is different to mine.

Cheers

For those going north. From Peru, I entered Ecuador via Tumbes/Huaquillas.

I got insurance in Huaquillas ($8 per month). Go into Huaquillas for about 1km, turn left into Santa Rosa,, after the Banco de Machala and the SOAT shop is at 10m down.

Border formalities are a bit odd, Aduanas is about 3km after Huaquillas at Chacras.

P.s. Petrol is $2 a gallon, so you might want to arrive empty...

In Ecuador they didn´t ask - I didn´t ask (Macara).

In Colombia they didn´t ask - I didn´t ask (Ipiales).

ATM

Anybody got an email address for ATM Buenos Aires, we didn't bother when we got to SA but now thinking we should sort something, we're currently in Paraguay.
We've been asked for it at a border and on the road, blagged it both times but would prefer to get it sorted as it's so cheap.

Cheers
Pete

Blimey, what are you doing to get stopped so often? Try putting some clothes on?

I have been here 6 months and not stopped once - I know I have just tempted fate!!!
