Inevitable Tire Question - Santiago de Chile
Hi, when I arrive in Santiago in approx. a week I will be looking for some fresh rubber. Coming down from Alaska, I am currently on my second set of Michelin Anakees. Love 'em to death, and would like to find another set to get me all the way to Ushuaia and up to BA. However, I do realize I may not have much choice in the matter, so I will take alternatives if need be.

Anybody got tips on tire shops in general (I understand Lira Street is the place to look?) and shops that carry the Anakee in particular? My '00 TransAlp takes 90/90-21 front and either 120/90-17 or 130/80-17 rear.

I just sent e-mails in (Google Translated) Spanish to Palmax and Motolam.

You must visit Lira st. and Vitacura st. where you can find most important motorcycles related stores here in Santiago.

Yep, Inevitable would be the word!!
Well I´m glad that you asked, as I was going to be asking the same question, and it´s good to hear that there are some options, just if you buy the only pair in town, ask them to restock quickly as I´ll be coming through two weeks later looking for the same size!!
Ride safe, Peruvian traffic is quite something, huh? Don´t think we´ll be catching up to you, we still are north of Lima!!

Motolam it will be
Wow, actually got a same day reply from Paul at Motolam. That is a first after many attempts of contacting shops in Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia for other parts before and never getting an answer. Motolam has the tires I want in stock, so it looks like that is where I am going first.

Dave, Jose, thank you for the suggestions. I will be sure to use them should Motolam not come through. I notice MotoMundi carries Rev'it; I need new gloves, may drop by them as well (hope they have XXL).

Obie, I will tell them it is a popular size and they should stock up heaps! I am really picking up speed, going for the Chilean border tomorrow. Peruvian traffic is... an interesting change from anything up north. Do not exhaust yourself, with the girlfriend flying in and all, and say hi to Philippe for me.

Hey Richard,

I initially contacted them on info-at-motolatam.cl in spanish. Got the reply from paul-at-motolatam.cl in english. I just sent another e-mail to ask if they're open between x'mas and new year's. I'll be rolling in to Santiago this Sunday, fingers crossed they do business on mo/tu...

Oh, and there are no gas stations for 260 km between Arica and Pozo Almonte in the north of Chile. Just thought I'd let you and others know should you choose to take that route. I ran out today, 4 km short of the gas station. Thankfully I got a lift from some Chileans to the station, and another one going back. Like the people already. I now know my TransAlp has a range of 336 km. Fill up in Arica or carry sufficient spare fuel!

Baby got some new shoes!
Update; Paul at Motolatam (GPS S33 27.399 W70 37.884) did a fantastic job today. He and three of his enthusiastic mechanics put fresh Anakees under Trannie the TransAlp, did an oil and filter change, cleaned the brakes and swapped the front pads. As a bonus they gave the bike a thorough scrub, which got rid of my painstakingly collected protective dirt layer. We now look like we just got off the airplane... I hope it gets muddy riding the Carretera Austral!

Anyway, highly recommended. Oh, bring cash, no credit cards; he's only been in business for 8 months and hasn't been able to get that arranged yet.

Obie; he has one more set in this size, drop him an e-mail (or call) if you want to make sure they're here when you get to Santiago.

Richard; I heard you already announced your arrival. Good on ya.

I'm off to Puerto Montt.

Good stuff Vincent, yep the rear tyre is ordered, so is the front TKC80 from a different shop in that city. La Paz haz been a pain, I am now riding with a tube in a holed front tyre, not ideal.

Rubber side down, you are miles ahead of me

Whern are you now? I'm still in Santiago and will be here from 1-3 more days to get rear brake pads. If you'll be here fairly soon, we could ride down together.

Hi, I am still in Potosi, heading to Sucre today, I am desperate need of a front tyre as mine has a hole in it. I should be able to sort something out today.

I will still be a few days away, I am unsure whether I can get to see the Dakar on the way past, but I may catch up with you later. I will be in Santiago soon as there are two brand new tyres waiting for me there

Hellow. I been there 1 year ago. there is a touritech store in Santiago. I dont remember the mechanic name I thing is Miguel or Mario not sure. but you can get a tire there also they have many good thing. dont miss a check up your bike there. good mecanics. this stre is in a area where are many used part por cars. good look
