High roads in Peru?
Would like info on the Huancavelica to Ayacho via Santa Ines road, ,and if possible, ,the spur to Huayraccasa (16,598'). We will be there around the end of August.

hi
id did't the road from ayacho to huancavelica over santa ines.
the first 130 ks are paved road. after that you have to take the right unpaved road to santa ines were is an hostal andino. the road is not as that bad. 30 ks after santa ines you can chose ther right way for 5 ks than you reach the highet drivebal pass in the world(southamerican handbook) go back and you will reach after 55 ks huancavelica. on the to was only a littel bit of snow. the scenery is unbelivebil nice. i need from santa ines to huacanvelica 5-6 hours.

hello out there,

this "abra" is by far not the highest in the world, maybe in south-america. on the road from manali to leh in northern india - for example - you will have to cross a 5300m+ pass...

anyway: sounds like a better option to go this way to cerro de pasco than via lima. does anyone know, if the access road from pisco is PAVED up to the turnoff for santa ines?

My reading shows that this stretch may be the highest 'continuous' road, at an average altitude of over 4000m for 150k. There is a 5900+ pass in Bolivia, I believe, also, and another at a similar height near Huaras and Huari, Peru. I hope to be near there soon, I will report back with GPS readings!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
