Has anyone ever been asked for their Temporary Entry Permit in Brazil?
 

I do have one which I re-newed to give me a total of 6 months. And also had one on other occassions but I have never been asked for it.

The reason I am asking is that I wonder......... if I dont get the TEP then I could stay longer than the 6 months. From what I am reading I could leave using the Paraguay border?

I have a Uruguayan passport and cedula (mercosur) and an Australian passpor as well (I dont tend to use this one in South America).

I am just looking for ways to enjoy this beautiful country for longer.

Who would aks for permits
 

Hey mate,

It's not very common a police officer would ask for a bike permit if you're in towns, but when you're on the roads specially federal roads, you've good chances to be asked for the permits as the police who take care of this roads are the "policia rodoviaria federal" who use blue navy and yellow uniforms, don't try to bribe those guys, they get a stupid amount of money as salarie, most of times a good conversation would be enough for the guy to let you go or even help you.
As you have the permits already I wouldn't stay longer than the permit says, because when you leave, you would have problems as the permit and passport and linked on their archives

I understand your thought, I 've the same problem, brazilian with an european bike, I've had my bike here in Iguazu for more than a year and never had problems as I don't have the permit anymore, it's like I already left Brazil, but as the border here is a mass I exited the bike to Argentina and turned back to Iguazu. The bike has no permit at the moment, if i decide to out of city( more than 50 km) I just go there, get the permit at receite federal and that's enough.

Thank you Rod. Are you as a Brasilian able to get a TEP?

I was thinking of going to Iguacu exiting myself and the bike out of Brasil (possibly Paraguay) and then just entering myself and not getting a new TEP. The risk is getting stopped and asked for papers.....but I have never been asked yet....maybe just lucky.

I am a long way away though. I am in Praia do Pipa near Natal so I will have a long ride.

Yeah, you're quite a long way from here, where did you enter??? I'll try to get in touch with the border officers and see what they can do, I'm sure there's a solution for this, i was at the border a few hours ago,i f i had seen your message I would have asked already.

What do you mean stoped and asked for paper??? Do you mean on the way to Iguazu or here when enterig or leving Iguazu, if the problems is here, I garantee we'll do the right thing and also the border officers will tell exactly what to do or "not to do".


as a Brasilian I can, and must get the permit for the bike, just the brasilian and my italian passport are not stamped as you don't need if you are brasilian, i link the bike and the permit to my italian passport.

I would not be worried about being stopped and asked for TEP on the way to Iguazu as currently my papers are good. I need to leave Brasil by the 30th October and was hoping to stay for another 3 months.

Therefore I thought if I exit the bike out and hand in the TEP before it expires then ride back into Brasil without getting a new TEP. When I leave 3 months later they would fine me for overstaying my tourist visa but not the bike as they would no longer be linked?

These are just thoughts in trying to find a way of staying an extra 3 months. I have already renewed it once so it will take me to the 6 months that they give.

Ok let's see, you want to exit only the bike now and later, after 3 months, yourself right???

we can do it with no problems, you would be fined around 200 reais on the exit, buuut I'll check it exactly, don't worry about the bike when going out, we can work on something to exit "without" the bike.

At this moment I have to warn you that you may have problems if caught with expired visa, of course you're quite experienced on the brasilian roads and would have no problems, but there's always a risk involved right, i'm sure that if you're around here we can go around it but when far away it's all with you.

In answer to your original question: yes, I was stopped by federal police and asked for my TIP. I can only remember once with any certainty--somewhere unexpected and otherwise unremarkable a day or two west of Salvador--but I think there was one other time as well.

Mileage varies.

Yes I was thinking of exiting only the bike so that I dont have to pay a fine when I actually leave Brasil 3 months later. But only exiting in terms of handing in the TEP as I still want to ride the bike in Brasil for another 3 months after the 30th Oct deadline. I will give you a call in a couple of days as it may be easier to talk through options.

$200reis for overstaying visa would be quite reasonable.
