From Brasilia to Manaus, which way?

hello Hubbers

I'm travelling the americas 2up with my girlfriend, currently in Brasil, going to Brasilia. I really want to go to Manaus, my grandfather born there, but I don't know which way to take: Brasilia to Belem, boat to Manaus, or Brasilia to Porto Velhio, boat to manaus.

Brasilia to Porto Velhio is like 500 kms longer
Boat from Belem to Manaus is like 2 days longer

which route is safer? I mean for the bike, i saw some videos and pics of the process of putting the bike in the boat in Belem and I was like :eek3:

the scenery thing is a issue too, obviouslly it will be better the nicest route

and last but not less important is the price issue, some body can help me with their experiences, to compare both routes, wich one will be more "low budget friendly"?

thanks very much again, and sorry for my crappy english

There is a road from Porto Velho to Manaus that is just totally dependent on the weather as it can turn into a bit of a bog when its wet and can be just a long dirt and broken pavement ride other times. BR 319 is the name of it.
Putting bikes on boats is not a big deal if done properly. If you have some experience riding dirt and some mud you can try the roads and stay off the boring rivers, just keep close eye on the weather.

I'm looking forward to getting on 319 myself ;)

Thanks John!

If I was alone I will totally try it but We are travelling 2up and we had very difficult but funny time in route 40, argentina, because of the mud so we will avoid it if we can... We are waaaay to heavy. My concern is which way, including boat, is better. Maybe we can met in your way down-our way up!

If you haven't been to Bahia yet, go via the coast for that reason alone. Gorgeous cities, gorgeous coast. However, plan to spend a bit of extra time enjoying it or what's the point?

The Brasilia - Belem - Manaus is definitively the best option if you want to avoid heavy off road riding.

zaplaje 16 Apr 2012 23:31

Hi Markharf!
We stayed in Reginaldo's home in Curitiba and he told me about you and your trip. I already have been in bahía and we will love to visit Brasilia, and our low budget will love save some bucks going by the interior of Brasil instead the north-east coast. That's why

Bkm_br: why you say that? I thought that the brasilia-Porto Velho road was totally paved, or Im wrong?

markharf 16 Apr 2012 23:34

Actually, if I remember right you can ride on pavement all the way to Porto Velho. After that it's the riverboat, or quite a bit of mud or dust (or both).

thanks guys

now we are stucked in Brasilia (in a way of saying, we loved the city!) waiting for a rear sprocket. we will depart on monday or thursday if the things go right, and I still don't know which route we will take, my only concern now is wich boat it's safer, cheaper and wich river route is shorter. Any clues?

Going there too

HI there

I am Brazilian/Canadian and I just road from Canada to Bahia where all my family lives, I entered Brazil via Peru into Acre and I had the opportunity to meet this amazing people, bike rider in Rio Branco. They have given me lots of info on the area and now I am in Paraguay on my way back there to take the ferry from Porto Velho to Manaus.

Here is the thing, did lost of research on the Manuas-Belem trip. It cost around 500 Reais for a person on a hammock for just about 6 days.. you pay for the food on top of that. There are cabins but if you tall, don't spend the money, since you will end up on the top deck floor. The bike is around the same cost, but only the boat Rondonia can take. It runs only twoice a month, so plan your arrivals. The prices were confusing since if you go through a travel agency, it will be double. Told to go there and buy at the port.

From Porto Velho, around 700 Reais and takes 2 1/2 days, including food, bike and wife in a cabin. Cheaper if you take the hammock. Here is the catch.... I did this road on the way to Bahia a couple of months ago... from Brazilia to Cuiaba the road can make you cry. Super dagerous and lots of huge trucks transporting soy and dropping on the pavement, so feels like gravel. I was by myself that time and I did go through the Chapada dos Guimaraes and was nice, has a nice town in there but as any turist town in Brazil. EXPENSIVE.

My take, I would still go to Porto Velho, don't know what bike you have but I would consider some side roads to avoid the heavy traffic.

Good luck, I will be there sometimes end May.

Cheers

Joca

Hi again Joca

we met in the route a Venezuelian guy who did it a couple of weeks ago and I talk him by mail his answer:

200 reais for you and 200 reais for the bike if you DON'T buy it in the boat it self... 150 for you and 150 for the bike if you buy it in the boat, the boat name is DOIS IRMAOS (two brothers) and depart from porto velho every WEDNESDAY

(all that info is from he, I hope that it's true)
