North American border crossings

Hello all,
A few things I am wondering about at the moment.
First: Would I be permitted to cross from Canada into USA, and into Mexico with a bike insured under someone elses name? (father with same surname)

Second: If I were to purchase one month of British Columbian insurance, and allow this to run out while away, will it be trouble returning to Canada in 6-10 months time after the expiration?

This second question is in the account that my first choice isn't possible. Bike insur

Thank you

1. Into the US, no problem, they are unlikely to even look at the registration, although they might. If you have a notarised letter stating that your father has given you permission to use, and cross the border with, the bike, you should have no trouble. For Mexico, should be the same, but no guarantees. Search the site for "Mexico border crossing", or go to the Meetings page, and the Mexico Meeting, for details on Mexican border crossing info and links and contacts. Might be wise to ask the Mexican authorities to be sure. Report back when you find out for sure please!

Re 2. No problem, that's the way to deal with BC insurance, BUT you would be wise to renew the insurance BEFORE you hit the US on the return, as you will be without insurance unless you do. Get your father to renew it for you, WITHOUT mentioning that the bike is currently in Mexico. damhik...

Note also that the instant you cross into Canada, unless you have renewed your insurance you are liable to a very fat fine.

You get Mexican insurance when you enter Mexico at the border.

Hi,
As what I have gathered, a notorized letter is all that is needed to cross into Mexico.
Two different agencies, same answer.
Apparently people using autos do this all the time.

You don't mention whether your name is on the title, but if it is in your father's name be prepared for some hassle. Several years ago I did a Mexico tour with Pancho Villa moto tours, and having more money than time at the time, flew to El Paso and rented a bike from Pancho Villa. When we crossed the border, they didn't want to issue a peremit unless the bike was registered to the rider. Pancho Villa ended up "selling" me the bike, so we could get across. This was in '97, so it is obsolete info, but something to keep in mind.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
