Current Gas Prices for Central and South America

Well I know this subject has been asked many times before, I have yet to find any current information on gas prices. Are they going up just as it is here in the US? Any info. that is as current as possible is greatly appreciated!

Peru is expensive...16 Soles per gallon for 95 octane in Arequipa, works out at U$ 4.90 per gallon or U$ 1.28 per litre assuming I've got the maths right.

This is an excellent topic which effects all of us travellers, especially when we write up our budgets. I just spent some time googling the topic, but i have yet to find an all-encompasing sight that gives us gas prices for today from all around the world. This indeed would be quite helpful, i'll keep searching.

Guat is approx $3.00US per gallon.

I think Venezuela is still giving it away...$0.20US per gallon.

Mexico...

I know Mexico isn't considered part of Central America... but it might interest you to know that currently the price is about 6.5 pesos MX for a liter. That works out to be about $2.50 US /gallon.

Currently $5/gal. for Super here in Costa Rica. "Super" is equivelent to regular in the States and it seems unlikely that anyone reading this has a motorcycle that could run on the "regular".

Smellybiker 19 Jun 2006 19:42

Costa Rica sounds like Bolivia....

'super' = flamable
'commun' = potable

Gas in Chile

Actually we are breaking the record price!

From my notes from my trip in January and February of this year, for premium unleaded gasoline:

Mexico $2.82 to $2.96 gallon
Guatemala $3.10
Honduras $3.62

The premium gasoline in all these countries is excellent, at least equal in quality to the U.S. (probably better energy content than U.S. fuel due to it being real gasoline and not watered down with ethanol).

There has been a lot of political pressure in Honduras to keep gas prices down, including cab drivers blocking roads in the capital for a day or two in protest of price increases. The government just signed a purchase agreement with Venezuela at a discount, and a commission is working on a compettitive bidding process to encourage price reductions from other fuel suppliers.

At the risk of getting political: If Chavez' Venezuelan Citgo gasoline is typically selling for 6 cents/gallon less than other brands in the U.S., clearly putting pressure on U.S. oil companies to keep prices down, and President Bush is picking fights with Chavez, I have to wonder whose side our President is on. The big oil companies', or the consumers'?

Thanks everyone!

This helps my budgeting a lot, but sounds like some places will hit the wallet pretty hard. Going off of the prices so far received, it seems if I budget approx. $4/gallon (give or take a little) it will give me a little error on the safe side. Granted it'll all depend on how much time I spend in the different countries.

brclarke - Thanks for including Mexico, as I will have to go through it to get to CA and SA.

Keep the replies coming in! The more info. the better for everyone.

mexico to ecuador

we've been traveling since oct of 06.....my notes aren't the best but it's been hovering around $3 a gallon through most of central america. colombia has been the most expensive so far, around $4, with ecuador the cheapest yet at $1.50 gallon. i had been running their super, but switched to regular with no change in the bikes (2 f650gs).

my other comment is gas is just one part of the travel budget. becuase of the cheap lodging and food that is always readily available, you can make almost any budget work. the more expensive gas gets, you just slow down, do less miles - this assumes you've got the time.

hope it helps.

Colombia

Super, 8500 Pesos a gallon, (mas o menos), about $3.75.
