Can you recommend any cheap accommodation in and around Tierra del Fuego

We´ve heard that prices rocket as you head south, so if people have any advice on cheap places to stay, eat and so on, it would be much appriciated.

If the weather OK we´ll camp, but it would be good to have a back up plan.

These are the ones I used. They've all got off road parking, are very friendly and are within easy walking distance of all the shops you could need. Hotel Argentino is an absolute must, great atmosphere and brilliant guest books. It might be an idea to phone ahead, especially for Patagonia Pais.

They weren't the cheapest, but I thought, for a gringo, they were great value. Maybe 22 pesos for the Argentine ones and 6500 for the Chilean? Not too sure as it was nearly three years ago. Enjoy yourself whilst you're out there, worry about the money when you get home.

There is a Canoe Club in Rio Grande where you can camp but if the weather is awful then you can put your bike in the canoe storage area and you get to sleep upstairs in a room, you can get a hot shower there as well. Very friendly people.
Not sure how much it is as we stayed there 3 years ago, but we have two bikers staying at our finca at the moment who stayed there earlier this year will ask them to look at this notice!

When I am in Porvenir, on the Chilean side of Tierra del Fuego, I stay at the Hotel Central, for the equivalent of about US$18. It is near the main plaza up the hill to the north of the Club Croata (landmark building you cannot miss). Hotel Central is not the cheapest but I have a favourite room there that looks out over the town and the bay, and there is protected parking for the KLR in the back. Breakfast is included and it is hearty enough to get you through half a day. Owner is very helpful, kind, and accommodating. There are many cheaper places to stay in Porvenir but this is my favourite, and strongly recommended.

For good eating when in Porvenir, try the Club Croata, which has excellent seafood and meat dishes, as well as items such as avocado stuffed with Dungeness crab (OK, I splurged, but not much). There are two internet cafés in Porvenir but they are often stuffed with kids using video games.

When in San Sebastian, on the Argentine side, there is or was a short time ago, a hotel just north of the gas station, and in sight of the Argentina customs and immigration checkpoint. It was cheap (or reasonable) and had good food, comfortable and warm rooms with view of Atlantic. Sorry don't remember the name.
