Courier Parcel into Santiago
Hi all
I want to get a parcel shipped from the UK to Santiago, any advice on good couriers and how to avoid hassles. The parcel will include a rear tyre !!

Alternatively, would it be better to get it sent to Mendoza across the border

FIRST RULE of shipping into foreign countries as you are doing, is:

* Find the local courier companies and see who is there. If you can only find UPS, then that's who you ship with.

If the company you ship with isn't there, they have to hand it off to someone somewhere along the way - and that's when all tracking falls apart, and stuff gets lost and delayed. KISS principle - keep it super simple!

Also, once you have contacted the local courier your package will be coming through, make sure they know who you are, and that's a big start to getting your package without hassle. Ask them about customs and duties etc. You may in theory be required to pay duty, often an exorbitant amount - but they may know the tricks and be able to help...

It's usually important that it is VERY clear you are passing through, and not staying - that may avoid the duties.

If you are in Santiago probably is easier to buy the tyre there. Metzeler is the cheapest option, made in Brazil. A very good option.

Go to DHL or FedEx websites, and check if they have offices in the city of your choice. Have parcel sent to this office with the instruction that you will pick it up personally within 30 days. Do not send tire, which can be bought locally, and will cost a fortune in freight.

Hi Dave,

Did you find a reliable courier eventually? I am looking at getting some parts sent out from the UK. When people say "it'll cost a fortune" just how much is that? Need to get some forks, front wheel and most of the front end of an Africa Twin sent over.

There is nothing to prevent you from going to the air freight offices in town to enquire about their shipping rates.

Seems that DHL and then FedEx are present in Santiago.

I had a friend in the UK ringing around and he found best rates through an agent who used DHL rather than DHL direct. Still not cheap. For example, a rear tyre and some other stuff upto about 10kg was 100GBP cleared to santiago ! I found a tyre locally now.

Have you had an accident then ? Sounds like you want to ship a lot. I can mail you the agents in the UK if that helps ?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
