I rode through Mexico,Belize, and Guatemala last month. There is a $10USD exit fee for leaving Belize. In addition to that fee, there was a $3.50USD "conservation" fee when I exited Belize to Guatemala, but they did not ask for the "conservation" fee when I exited Belize to Mexico, perhaps it wasn't a legitimite fee. I can't remember exactly the other fees I paid. It was a good bit to enter Mexico though, and a major credit card is required. Insurance is required in Belize, (Mexico too for that matter) Belize insurance was an outrageous $9USD per day, but I would definately get some. I was warned before I left that they were doing license checks just outside the capital and have thrown several expatrites in jail for not having insurance. Sure enough, I was stopped at a roadblock on the western hwy right before it intersects with the hummingbird hwy, and ask to produce a license and proof of insurance. Thanks for all the info on the other border fees.... Let us know how you make out in Mexico, Belize, and Guatemala.

thanks for the reply, which i read before going to belize, but didn't have time to respond at the time.
we left guatemala for belize and didn't have to pay anything.
entering belize we didn't have to pay anything, not even buy insurance as we were only in transit from guatemala to mexico. so we had to do it in one day. to leave belize we had to pay 14 usd. you have to specify this when you enter the country as they write it in your passport. we were checked twice and asked to show insurance. the first time on the whole trip. in mexico we had to buy a tourist transit pass which has the same vadility as the visa in your passport, in our case 30 days, and the price would have been the same for 90 days. the cost was 24 usd and it include road tax and insurance.

so to conclude:
guatemala out: 0 usd
belize in: 0 usd in transit
belize out (same day): 14 usd
mexico in: 24 usd

philipp

we didnĀ“t have to pay anything to leave mexico and only 6usd for the visa waiver form to enter the usa

mexico out: 0 usd
usa in: 6 usd

jeremy,

all the border crossings are very well organised. all have a bank in the building where you have to either deposit money or change currency. if you want to cross borders in the evening or at weekends they all charge you additional fees.

Phillip,
It sounds like you had a pretty easy time getting thru each border, I've never heard someone call a Latin American border "well organized". Do you speak Spanish well? Did you use any "tramitadores" at the central america border crossing? Where are you headed in the US?

pj30 15 Jul 2002 04:51

hi mark,

i speak spanish well and never used the little kids to help me out. in a way it was the challenge to do it without them and show them that it can be done. it goes without saying that it would have been much faster at some borders to use their help.
i am in alaska right now and going to cross canada to get to new york.

greetings,
philipp

Does anybody know what the current cost of insurance for Belize is? I went through in 2002 but don't remember paying but I was only in for the day. There was no mention of it, I just signed my name in the big book and went on my way.

Also, is there some place I can get a few weeks of insurance that would cost less than 2 weeks of the border insurance? 9USD a day is more than my food budget.

Cheers, Steve

There is a MUCH cheaper way to do this. Buy insurance for 3 months... it costs $140 Belize. ($70) When you leave, cash in the insurance on the way out. I was there for 3+ weeks and ended up paying $64 Belize ($32) for my insurance.

Actually I'm sure I posted this in an earlier post.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried reading all of the discussion on "Belize insurance" but it is kind of difficult and I end up reading about something, then opening a link off of that page... It's all too interesting! http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ian,
Did you enter Belize at the Chetumal Mexico crossing and buy your 3 months insurance off the guy in the small white building with the red roof? Did you exit and get your refund at the same place? Or did you exit into Guatemala?

Chetumal, then to Guatemala.. and the guy in the small white building wasn't sure it would work, but it did. By the way, this is the only insurance company you can buy insurance with at any border in belize.
