Chile, temporary import document

we flew Into santiago, Chile yesterday and managed to get a temporary import document instead of using the ´carnet´, i have been told i will have to pay for this but as yet have not been told how much. the all process involved me smelling a rat and i wonder if a payment has to be made. if so what kind of price am i expected to pay ?

apart from that first impressions of South America actually impress.

hi,
I've gotten the same temporal import permit at the peru-chile border on the 9th.
free of charge, so maybe they were looking for a bribe.

thanks for that mark,

as yet the shipper has not got back to us regarding payment for this document and seeing as he doesn´t know where we are it´s tough luck. during the spanish conversation of my shipping agent and the customs chief i heard the saying ' fifty fifty ' which is a typical chilean phrase for 'lets do a deal ', time will tell !

TIP should be free and for 6 months. call his bluff: ask agent to pay fee for you, get him to get a receipt from customs and upon this, pay...

they joys of dealing with spivs... aka agents

enjoy

Past year I asked the Chilean custom about this topic, and this was the very oficial answer:

SUBDIRECCION TECNICA
DEPARTAMENTO NORMATIVO
REGIMENES ESPECIALES

GOBIERNO DE CHILE
SERVICIO NACIONAL DE ADUANAS

REG: 140/16245-29.09.04
F. : 1704

____________________________________

DE : JEFE SUBDEPARTAMENTO REGIMENES ESPECIALES

A : SR. JOSE PEDRO ESPINOSA

a) Pasaporte.

Saluda atentamente a Ud.,

JSS7SGG.

Temporary importation of motorbike into Chile

The temp import into Chile is for 90 days, not 180, unless the bike has Argentine or Bolivian plates, in which case it's 180 days.

At one time you could do 90 days and leave and come back and do it again for another 90 days. Apparently those days are over. It looks like from now on it will be a one-time temp import of 90 days.

Furthermore, you don't need the carnet anywhere in North, Central or South America. If your agent told you otherwise, or if he tries to tell you the TIP cost anything, laugh uproariously at him.
