Chile & buying used foreign reg'd bikes?

Thinking of flying to Chile in 2010 to ride the length of the country. Preferred option is to buy pair of smallish single cylinder four stroke bikes (DRZ400 sized) & then sell them before returning home.

I see bikes for sale on this forum that are already in that part of the world & usually well kitted out, anyone able to answer the following queries:

Are these bikes in need of TLC & an overhaul? I'm thinking this as I assume (but could be wrong) that they're being sold after completing a serious trip?

Many seem to be US registered - how does it work in that part of the world re: Carnets & EU citizens buying US registered bikes to ride in Chile etc?

Ideally we'd buy in the north & sell in the south prior to leaving - feasible?

Anyone know of a rental outfit operating in Chile?

Thanks in advance.

Hey mate, if you buy a US registered bike you can do the rego by mail I think however it may take a while. You may want to consider the Honda NX400 which sells in Chile that way you get a new bike with none of the fuss. Check out Chileautos.cl: miles de vehĂculos nuevos y usados
