Puerto Maldonado/Cuzco/Assis Brasil

Dear all,
How's the road that go from Assis Brasil on Brazil to Puerto Maldonado then Cuzco on Peru? :confused1:
Can we road on this on december? Have you some information?

Yes, Asis/Brasil to Puerto Maldonado and Cuzco can be traveled in December. It of course is the beginning of the rainy season then, so I hope you are on good on-off road bikes, because there will be SOME mud.

From Asis-Brasil you cross the new bridge into Inapari, Peru



Turn left into town on the first road and go to the end on the right for Immigrations and customs (aduana). From there it is 70 km of pavement, past Ibarria. Then you will come to construction/paving going on.



The road is good and wide and mostly well-packed. A little rain will hold down the dust, alot of rain will make it a little slippery. 170 more km to the river



and Puerto Maldonado. In PM, I recommend staying at the "Cabana Quinta"



From Brasileia to Puerto Maldonado is a good day. Don't go past PM that day as the next place to stay is not until Mazuko or Quince Mil.

From Puerto Maldonado to Cuzco, the road is varied. The first 130 km is dirt with sometimes deep dust. If this gets alot of rain, it could be messy, but there are so many vehicles traveling the road that you could put the motos up in a truck if it gets too bad. Then is turns to more gravel on to Mazuko. Just past Mazuko there is a deep water crossing. If it has recently rained, you may have to wait or cross in a truck.

Then you enter the mountains and the construction/dynamite work to Quince Mil, but the road is rocky and solid. Stay there overnight in Quince Mil as there is not very good lodging in Marcapata. From Quince Mil start out early. The road is rocky and good (although narrow), but you will have to pass over two high points. The first (5,000 mt)



is between Marcapata and Tinka, the 2nd (4,500 mt)



is between Tinka and Urcos. From Urcos it is good pavement all the way to Cuzco.

I heard something about the construction of the asphald, and that it's only possible to pass at night, when don't have any road detonation.

They are continuing the construction so it is possible that they are still blocking the road between Quince Mil and Mazuko. If they stop you in Mazuko, then just stay the night there and leave VERY early before they close the road. You can still make it to Cuzco that day.

Good, if we can road at day don't have problem, but I'm afraid to road at night in this situation.
We'll go with XT660 motorcycles.
Do you think we've to put special tires?

Very good motos, you will have no problems. My favorite tire for pavement AND dirt/mud is the Pirrelli RallyCross MT-21. It is smooth on hard surfaces and good grip in soft.

I can't see links here at the company, but I'll look at home. Do you think the best way is change the tires near the dirt road or go from here with then?

I got 10,000 km out of mine with alot of pavement included. How far are you from Asis? I think I would start with the tire, but I'm sure you can get them in Porto Velho if you wish...

Charapa,
We're 4,500 km from Assis Brasil. But, after we pass this road and go to Machu Picchu, we're planning to pass on Atacama Desert on the Paso de Sico. After all, more 300 km on dirt road I believe.

We chance the plans.
This year we'll go at Atacama for Paso Sico, then come back from Paso San Francisco
On 2009, december, we'll go to Acre, Cuzco, Bolívia, Death Road (Estrada da Morte) near Coroico/Yungas, then come back to Brazil from Chaco Paraguaio.
