Carnet necessary? & Insurance questions

Hi,

These questions are somewhat related so I thought I would put them together.

1)Is it really necessary to buy a carnet de pasaje if I do not plan to sell the bike in Latin America? And, if I do plan to sell the bike, how can I get around the aduanas? (here in ecuador to matriculate/naturalize a moto so it can be sold costs about $800)?

2)Where can I get theft or damage insurance on a bike in Latin America?

I checked out the Insurance page and went to Forbes Insurance Agency¢¥s site only to discover that they do not cover motos.

I am thinking of travelling from US-Panama or Ecuador.

Thanks!

I traveled from US to Costa Rica this summer. No Carnet needed.
I was able to purchase insurance only in Mexico

NO carnet needed for South and North America. search on carnet and you'll find tons of info on this.

There is no legal way around paying import fees.

As noted, insurance is only available in Mexico, and it's not much.

Read the website, search on carnet or insurance and South America and you'll find a ton of answers on all this.
