Carnet de passage
Hi

I am planning a trip through South America, starting at the end of this year.

I which countries does one need a carnet de passage?

True, but...
Strictly speaking none. But having one makes quite a lot of borders easier and faster particularly when arriving by ship. Crossing from Brazil to Venezuela can be tricky without one (but still possible). Remember that the value on your carnet is up to you. Very few borders bother to check that the value is reasonable, so having a carnet with a very low value can be the best of both worlds. (PS I went in my Mog rather than buy the Duro, was that a good move?)

have crossed all countries and many different borders in the americas (over 300.000 km in total) never ever encountered problems for not having a carnet de passage. Not even when arriving by ship (Argentina 1986 + 2004,Peru 1989, Uruguay 2001 )
Just having the documents in your name (and an insurance in many places nowadays) is enough.

Hi Albert,

i'm planning a trip from Mexico to Central americas and south america starting jan 2008 and have the same question.
in Holland you have to obtain a CDP from the German ADAC. See:Carnet_efor all info.

So far, from dutch ANWB it apears that Peru, Ecuador and Uruguay require a CDP.

yeah yeah the ANWB like the consulates always see big black clouds everywhere. Uruguay does not even recognise a CdP. When I was getting my car out of Montevideo port (arrived from South Africa) in 2002 I tried to use the carnet in order to speed up things (and hoping to pay less) but they did not even look into it, said a Carnet is not recognised in urugauy although it was mentioned on the CdP..
In Peru the same thing even entering by sea I did not need a Carnet, let alone the landborders which are everywhere a lot easier than ports (same for Ecuador) Have crossed them an uncountable amount of times (last time was july 2007) and did not need a CdP ever. You always get a (free) permiso para turistas for 3 months.

You do not need a Carnet in all Americas.
If you plan to continue to Africa, there it is another story...

No carnet for Mexican bike I rode south last year from Veracruz to Ushuaia . Only border delay was entering Honduras to Copan where head of Customs insisted I drink his s in his office and watch the World Cup France/Mexico match.

Need help for two friends in Ecuador. I've posted this elsewhere in this forum. Received a call from two friends in Quito, Ecuador this afternoon. They flew into Quito today from Panama City and have their motorcycles arriving tonight. They have been told that they cannot receive their bikes without a "Carnet de Passage". Neither friend took a "Carnet" with them as we understood that it was not required in Central or South America.
Reading the posts on this forum it appears to be somewhat confusing - different experiences. I spoke with an Ecuadorian Consular in British Columbia tonight and he thought something was needed but didn't know the proper name untill I mentioned the Carnet. He thought it was needed in most countries in South America.

Any suggestions or advise? Any quick solutions?

Two friends of mine arrived by air in Quito with thier bikes and were asked for CDP which they did not have. They managed to have thier bikes release without one for a payment each of $50 + a $28 storage fee. I don't know what documents they used but it can be done.
There was a english speaking lady in the customs office who handled the documents, I think her name was Bertha.

Sorry I don't have any more details.

it might be ignorance of the customs at the airport or they just want to see $$$?
Ask for a ´permiso tempoária para vehiculos de turismo´ . This permiso is for free, but their surely will some be administrative and handling fees (
usual at seaports and airports)
