Can I sell my bike in a different country than where I bought it?

Hi Folks,
about to depart on 5 month trip around South America.
Thanks to the wealth of information on the HUBB, I'm heading to Chile (Santiago) first as seems like the best place to buy a bike. From what I have read, the only legal way to on-sell the bike is in the country where it was registered. Ideally I'd prefer to sell it in Colombia (or north of continent) to avoid the extra miles returning to Chile.
Apart from recovering some cash from selling the bike, I have read there are 2 issues with paperwork:
1) selling bike in Columbia (or other country than Chile) illegally would mean I still have the import stamp in my passport, so may have problems leaving that country without the bike
2) the Chilean customs still have the record of my vehicle exit, so if/when I return to Chile on a future trip, I risk problems at customs.

Does anyone know how to solve these issues, or is the only way to buy and resell the bike in the same country?

Thanks for your help!
Craig

You'll hve to

1) export it from the country where you bought it ... some places $0

2) import it to the country where you want to sell it ..

Ba=est to talk to the customs people in both countries,

think about the costs e.g. x$ and y time to get back to where I bought the bike and sell it on, possible to sell the bike in country z while not inuring costumes fees here not exceeding (x$ + y * 40$)/3? (my figures - you think about your own)
and for importing you need to go to the countries embassy and ask a similar question about importing .. cost not exceeding say 2*(x$ + y * 40$)/3?

I know that when traveling into Mexico, we pay a small fee ($400) to guarantee that we'll leave the country with the bike.

Unsure if that fee is all that's forfeited if the bike is sold.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
