Camping in the Pantanal

Hola,

Does anyone know of any good camping spots in the Pantanal? Anyone been camping there, other than on an organised tour?

Any tips greatly appreciated.

Emma

hey Em and Hame
hope your trip is going well - i would have been in touch earlier if i could have layed hands on the scrap of paper i was using as a map from my time in the pantanal - found it now - i was in the area between Miranda and Corumba in southwest Brazil -as you head from the former you come to a point that is called Buraco das Pirananhas - here is the entrance to this pantanal parkland - its pretty much all sand and dirt from here with humpback wooden bridges every 300 meters - the sand is easy though - very rarely too deep - its a cracking route 60kms to what is called Curva Legue - here is the last outhouse - shop, food and you camp at the place for a dollar - the mosquitos were horrendous so I upgraded to a storeroom with mosquito mesh for 2 dollars - earlier that day I tried to go on from here to Porto da Manga where I heard you could ship the boat the couple of hundred metres across the river before continuing onto Corumba and Bolivia but the road dissapeared into the swamp 20 kms in. But those 20kms were the most surreal and worth the trip alone - if you want to motorbike across a dirt road teeming with sunbathing crocodiles, anteaters and tons of Capivaras and watch as they scurry off at speed to dive into the swamp either side as you approach - well then this is the road -
and you can camp at the curva before returning the 60kms to hook up with the main road and the onward journey

hope its some help

Hi Feargal,

Thanks once again for the positive info, much appreciated. Now in Santa Cruz after a great week in Samaipata. Hope to be in Corumba Monday or Tuesday. Will let you know how we go.

How about you? Are you in Columbia yet?

Have a good one,
Hame & Em
