I was calling from the cabinas telefonicas (little calling booths everywhere you look) for about 10 cents a minute. I never checked Skype, but I just made some calls from Colombia for 2 cents a minute to either land lines or cell numbers, which is essentially free.

Whenever I buy a phone card I end up losing it, leaving the country before I get to use it, or in other respects wasting it. Of course, that´s just me.

enjoy,

Mark

In Mexico get the calling cards sold by Farmacias Similares , they are quite inexpensive for calls made from hotel telephones and streetside phone booths. They hook into the Verizon Internationl system.
Also in Mexico the Ladatel phone cards are the next cheapest option.
For Central America you will have to buy a card in each country as far as I have experienced. Even though they are put out by the same companies there does not seem to be the option of using minutes in different countries.

I vote for Skype. I´ve been traveling (for the past 5 months) with a netbook computer, and I buy "Skypeout" credit that allows you to call the regular phone system for about 2 or 3 cents a minute. 90% of the places I have stayed had wifi, even in some pretty unlikely locations. The bonus with Skype is that if your family and friends are running it on their computers at home, you can call them for free (with video!)

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
