OK, i have read a few threads on this here about the above subject and I am a bit lost.

If I buy a US registered in BA and ride the bike around argentina WITHOUT leaving the country I can only assume that I have the remaining part of the 8 month temporary permit to use before the bike has to leave the country?

If the above is correct then the bikes I see advertised on this site in Argentina will have less than 8 valid months left in Argentina?

This is regardless of the title of ownership (which I am disregarding for the sake of the question).

Last time i was in argentina I spoke with Dakar Motos in BA and was told there were ways around this, they were quite helpful but mentioned this 8 month period which I have also read about in this forum.

Also if the above is true (lets assume it is), how much are foreign owned bikes in Argentina worth?

I have read, and from my own inquires while in Salta, that imported bikes such as transalps cost 11000 US dollars which even in OZ is considerable distorsion in pricing. How much can a used bike, with say 4 months remaining in the permit, be worth knowing that the new owner has only a few months to go before the time expires?

Having said all this maybe its just the cost, maybe thats just what people pay, or maybe there are ways around this by bending certain rules?????

Or maybe just another dreamer heading over the south america that has driven on some amazing roads and now would like to do it on the correct form of transport and is trying to save some coin!!!!!!!:mchappy:

Tileman, you can be listed on the Argentine Temporary Vehicle Import Permit as an authorized "rider" of a foreign registered bike, by the "owner" if he has the valid Temporary Vehicle Import Permit that he was issued upon entering Argentina.

Argentine Temporary vehicle Import Permits are issued for a maximum of 8 months. I am currently working with the legislature here to have this reviewed and changed to ONE YEAR. And, I am also asking for a review of the law that prohibits a foreign tourist from exiting Argentina with an Argentine registered bike that he/she legally purchased in Argentina.

Yes, as a forign tourist you can easily purchase and legally register a new or used Argentine registered motorcycle. Prices, as always depend on how much time you have to look for a bike and actually lower than in the States or europe if the bike is a Honda manufactured in Brazil. Example: Because of trade agreements between Argentina and Brazil...you can buy a brand new Honda XR 250 Tornado for US$5000 here or a brand new Honda NX400 Falcon for US$ 7000. On the other hand, a new Harley or a new BMW are more expensive because of heavy import tax.

If you want to ride a foreign registered bike in Argentina, You and the owner of the bike are required to present documents, passport with entry stamp, etc to the Aduana (customs) and the Aduana will stamp you on the existing Temporary Vehicle Import Permit as an authorized "rider."

This does not alter the expiration date of the Temporary Vehicle Import Permit and does not give you the right to exit Argentina with the bike. If you or the owner are stopped by police and the Temporary Vehicle Import Permit is expired, the bike will be confiscated by the police.

BEING LISTED AS AN AUTHORIZED RIDER does not "transfer" title of the bike to you nor does it allow you to leave Argentina with the bike. The "owner" who was issued the Temporary Vehicle Import Permit is the only person who can legally exit the bike from Argentina

IT IS ILLEGAL TO SELL A FOREIGN REGISTERED VEHICLE OR MOTORCYCLE IN ARGENTINA WITHOUT PAYING IMPORT TAX to customs , REGISTERING THE VEHICLE/MOTORCYCLE IN ARGENTINA AND THEN SELLING IT TO AN ARGENTINE, A PERMANENT FOREIGN RESIDENT OF ARGENTINA OR TO YOU - IF YOU SECURE A "domocilio" residence address verified by local police, and a "CDI" tax number issued to foreign tourists.

Securing the "domocilio" and "CDI" are simple processes.

BUT PAYING THE IMPORT TAX AND REGISTERING A FOREIGN REGISTERED VEHCILE/MOTORCYCLE IN ARGENTINA ARE VERY EXPENSIVE AND TIME CONSUMING PROCESSES. AND, UNLESS THE OWNER OF THE MOTORCYCLE IS A PERMANENT RESIDENT WITH "DNI" (A process that takes about 3 years, discounting the fact that immigration has been closed recently because of the flu scare) ) OF ARGENTINA, ALL BUT IMPOSSIBLE....

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND BUYING NEW OR USED IN ARGENTINA, TOURING ARGENTINA AND SELLING IN ARGENTINA BEFORE GOING HOME, OR LEGALLY PARKING YOUR ARGENTINE REGISTERED BIKE IN ARGENTINA UNTIL YOUR NEXT TOUR. THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT ON THE LENGTH OF TIME A FOREIGN TOURIST CAN LEAVE HIS/HER ARGENTINE REGISTERED BIKE IN ARGENTINA.

*Gatogato, from my point of view your suggestion, of falsifying documents with photoshop, does not clear up anything except my understanding of your corrupt nature.

I am now very suspect of your several posts regarding the "legal" sale of a foreign registered bike in Paraguay. Come on man, I thought we were trying to stop the corruption in South America, not recommend it.

And, if there were an accident involving personal injury or extensive property damage, by a bike with fraudulent documents, I am sure the insurance company, covering the bike, would investigate and make this fact known to police and thereby release themselves of paying potential liabilities. The foreign tourist rider would then lose his/her "get out of jail free" insurance card, be arrested and sit in jail until a judge could determine who was at fault. Sometimes this process takes 6 months or more, and the foreign tourist would be held responsible for all damages, and might face additional charges regarding the falsifying of legal documents.
