Buying motorbikes-Santiago, Chile - help needed (to buy and register)

Hello everyone on the HUBB :)
We are 3 Polish travellers (1 guy, 2 girls :) and we are planning to buy 3 motorbikes to travel Panamerican Highway (Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia).
We read the article about buying motorbike in Chile.
Tommorow we are getting our RUTS.
Today we checked Lira Street and Chileautos.cl webside.
We don`t have much experience with motorbikes and we can spend max. 800 000 Peso for one bike.
So far we consider buying:
- SKYGO SG 150 GY - 3A (new)
- EUROMOT GTX 200 (used 2008)
- TAKASAKI LX 150 - 30H (new)

We know these are not strong bikes but we have time to travel, but we don`t have much money. We are going to travel slowly, 300 km a day.
Any opinion, advice could be great for us.
Any possible help with registration (we speak very little Spanish) is very precious for us!
Maybe someone did the same road and can give us some information.
What kind of maps do you recomend for this trip (where we can buy them)?
Thank you guys!
Feliz Navidad :D

Ela, Gosia, Rafal

Here in Chile many Euromot owners are very happy with their bikes. This bike is not designed to enduro, but many are doing enduro with reasonable success.

If you have your RUT the paperwork is simple, you go to the Registro Civil and they will give you the new Padron (title) with your name. But you need half a day because the speed is not a caracteristic of Registro Civil. Registro Civil will review all bike's papers are OK to do the transaction. Don't go to a Notaria, because is more expensive and you will wait a long time for your Padron, and in the Notaria they not always review if all the bike papers are OK.

Santiago

I was in Santiago last year and this fine chap helped me out a great deal. He has now started a company to do it for others it seems. Here is a email I got from him last week. I can connect you to him if you want to know more. He works at the front desk at a large Hotel so his English is fine. South America is a blast and anyone that is even thinking of it should go. This guy can help you with everything you would need I think. A very satisified friend.

Hi I am in Santiago at the moment and will be until about the 20th of Jan. If anyone needs help with paperwork, finding things, please let me know.

Eldive 12 Jan 2010 02:41

We bought our bikes and registered them. We have first 500 km on our meters.
Now we are waiting for our PADRONs.
We put information about registration our bikes here:
BUYING MOTORBIKE - CHILE (2009/2010)
We are planning to head towards Ushuaia sometime next week.

We have question about insurance for Argentina, Bolivia, Peru.
Where we can get it and how much about it is?

PocketHead 12 Jan 2010 07:18

If you are riding from Santiago to Mendoza you can buy insurance from little huts along the way

Hi Eldive, for insurance try Aseguradora Magallanes, they are a Chillean company. you can buy insurance over the phone, and then collect the paperwork from an office. I found them to be the best priced. The one policy will cover you for Argentina, Bolivia, Brasil, Paraguay, Peru and Uraguay.
About your Padrons, you don´t have to wait for them to arrive in the post. you can go to any Registro Civil with the Solicitud de Transferencia and ask if the bike is in your name yet. When the transfer is complete any Registro Civil will print you a copy of your Padron on the spot for around 800 pesos. 5 days after the paperwork was done is a good time to start asking.
Also are you aware of the difficulty of leaving Chile in the north and crossing into Peru or Bolivia? it is likely you will not be able to. You should plan to exit Chile into Argentina and then go up through Bolivia and Peru.
I am in Santiago, let me know if you want to chat.
