Buying KLR Tyres: Ecuador, Colombia or Venezuela?

Any tips on what is a good place (ie. cost & availability) in these three countries for getting new KLR rubber (tubed 130/90-17 & 90/90-21)? Current tyres still have a lot of miles left, easily to Venezuela, but while I can live with them if I have to, they are rubbish. Have a soft spot for MT-21s, but whatever fits has to be dirt-oriented for the Guyanas & Brazil.

Muchísima gracias,
James

I don´t know much about Ecuador or Venezuela, but i´m sure you can find Bridgestone, Michelin, Metzeller or Pirelli tires in Bogotá from US$35 to above US$150.

Me and a buddy just completed a trip and actually bought tires in quito Ecuador. I can't remember all the details, but you can find them for a KLR. Try getting ahold of Ricardo Rocco- he pointed us in the right direction and is more than willing to help. Hope that helps.

You can most definitely buy good tires for KLR in Quenca, Ecuador, the enduro capital of the country. The KTM dealer is the pirelli dealer, many other moto shops with other brands. Im in Quito right now, just raced the Vuelta. If you get here before December send me an email.

Having now been in all three countries I reckon the easiest to get new rubber is Colombia, specifically in Bogotá.

Ecuador: in Quito all I could find were Maxxis (sp?) which I was told were $80 each, but in the end turned out not to be available. Cuenca might indeed be good though, since there were a few decent-looking shops there.

Venezuela: a local mechanic said that there are very few tyres for big enduro bikes.

Colombia: Metz Sahara III, Tourance, Pirelli MT60 and probably others available, but the Saharas were good enough to stop ringing 'round and only cost $100 for the pair.

In Quito, Ecuador, go to MotoAccess.

www.motoaccess.cc

They are a sponser of Club Adventura, a KLR650 club in Quito. The KLR650 is very popular in Quito among the more well off.

I got a rear tire there, and they usually stock rear tires. If you want a more agressive tire, the Maxxis knobbies are popular in Quito on the KLR.

and 8 years later...

You can find good tires in Cuenca, Ecuador for sure. Lots of bike shops, went to KTM, Moto Repuestos and found what I needed at Mr Motorcycle. Got a Metzler Sahara 3 (130-80-17) for 108$ (which after looking online is a good price).
Most common model is Pirelli MT60 for 17. More selection in 18.

Since you are going to Venezuela and the Guyanas from the sound of it I would go to Bucamaranga(sp?), Colombia and top off with MT-21(flip the front every 3000km to make em last), a good place is American Motos which has a good selection or the owners son who speaks great English can find you the tires if they are in town. I'd buy your MT-21 before Venezuela because I never found a one in Caracas, apparently you can't get them from what I found out but I did end up with a nice set of Mitas tires out of CZ which work good for the long roads down to Brasil.

Colombia is the best place to buy tires by far, I bought an extra set and hauled them to Caracas from Colombia and shipped them to Santa Elena, VZ and then hauled them down to Manaus and ditched them with a pretty girl to keep them for me when I get back.

HaHa just noticed the dates!

I am here in Bogota for two days and looking to replace a rear tire. I'm looking for something aggressive for my KLR for the dirt roads to come in the lower South American Countries. Any one have a line on a shop? I went to both the Yamaha and Suzuki dealers today, they only have road tires.
