temp papers

the temporary papers are fine to travel with - nobody ever said anything to me - you get this paper laminated into a driving licence size card and off you go - it has your name, the bike info , chasis numbers etc - nowhere does it say its temporary - you never need the original until you are selling it (if you are selling the bike ´with papers´)

Remember that you will probably have to return to Chile to sell the bike as nobody will want to pay you good money for it when its not nationalised in whatever country you end up in. You will have to pay import tax to leagalise it in another country other than Chile. And paperwork and time . . or sell it cheap to someone who will do this work or forge the bike papers for the relevant country .... so worth bearing in mind

Met 2 people in the last 2 days who have come here to Quito to buy their bikes and start their trips. 2 - 3 weeks for paperwork (apparently very easy) and bikes like vstorm 1000s, 3 years old for 8000 US, Honda xr250 1 and 2 year old for 3 - 4000 US - these prices from garages - cheaper than Colombia Im told - about the same as Chile.

Bikes in Bolivia and peru are much cheaper and apparently the paperwork is no problem either . .

hey piotr

to answer your questions
1 - i am still in ecuador and heading north to colombia in a week or so I hope so I wont know what its like to buy or sell there until then. What ive heard though is that its more expensive to buy than ecuador - no idea about the paperwork needed ... i will post you once I hear. Venezuela is not looking likely for me on this trip as time is running out on me so I dont know about there. Ecuador is 3 weeks max for papers, you dont have to register to live in the country like chile, you give them your passport details and thats that. The garage that sells you the bike does the paperwork - not sure how it works with private sale. Bikes are pricey

2 - " if i buy a bike in peru bolivia venesuela, columbia or ecuador whats the best place to sell one?"
the answer to this has to be always the country you bought it in - all papers ar obviously valid - no excuse for the buyer to say he can only offer you x amount because of all the trouble he has to go through to make the bike valid.
But .. the fact is if you buy a bike in peru or bolivia you can probably sell it ('black market' without papers )in countries like ecuador, colombia and chile for as much as you bought it for .

I have heard about paraguay being the land where you can sell your knackered old bike for bags of gold - no experience myself, was in paraguay and the country is bike mad but I think its only the 600cc and bigger type enduros that make the money here when selling because paraguay taxes on these bikes are so high. I am not 100 percent on this but I think its so - your bike would be commen here so maybe not as easy to sell for high price.

I have to sell my bike soon here in ecuador or colombia and I know already that time is going to be the decisive factor when selling. You want to ride till the last day, sell it and then fly but the reality is that you should probably stop riding 6 weeks before you leave and start the selling process. But whose going to do that? So you lose money when selling ...

If money is tight and you want to buy and sell without losing much i would investigate this route maybe - start in santa cruz in Bolivia east, buy bike do papers, go brazil south, argentina, chile/bolivia west, peru, ecuador, colombia, Venezuela - sell the bike in colombia or ecuador.
A guy was selling a super tenere from peru on this site that he bought in bolivia quite recently - search for this ad in the bikes for sale section and reply to or p.m. him to get info about paperwork in bolivia.
Peru is another option for starting - search for people who bought there or start a new thread specifically asking who has.

Hope some of this is of some help - i am a newbie to all this, hopefully some of the other guys who have been round this continent dozens of times might be able to chip in some more -

mail me if i can be of any help
