Buying a cheap bike in Buenos Aires?
I can't seem to find any advice on buying a bike in Buenos Aires.
I'm looking for something around 1500 USD. i'm easy, the best I can get for that price, I'm hoping to set off ASAP

Does anyone know any good dealers? Should I buy something new? (as I don't know much about motorbikes, could be easily ripped off!)
Would you recommend catching a bus over to Santiago and buying it there? Where there is much more advice, and I know a bike I can get!

Also I'm waiting for my UK license to come through (It will take about a month)! Do you think I could set off without it? And pick it up in North Argentina. Does it need to be seen, riding in Argentina?

Any advice would be GREATLY appriciated.

Hi Barny,
I'm not going to be much help on this, having flown my bike from the UK to BA, I don't know anything about buying one out here. Keep your eye on the Wanted/For Sale forum though and something will turn up sooner or later.

The only time I've been asked to show my license (this was the IDP not my UK license btw) was at BA airport when I went to collect my bike. I'm sure other people have completely different experiences though.

Why not wait the month? Get your license, get yourself down the post office for an IDP and in that time something suitable will have turned up on Wanted/For Sale and you'll be able to fly out and enjoy yourself.

I don´t want to sound rude but you think its posible to ride without an license????Or insurance??????
Of course but the consecuenses can be.......
Just one police control and your bike is impounded.And don´t offer $$$$$$.
Bikes are easy to find,look here
Moto 125cc - Motos en MercadoLibre Argentina.
Now to register it into your name........and be warned! No exit from Argentina posible during the first year.

if you think only in paperwork and the maybe consequences, nobody here on the HUBB would have ever left home. Or am I wrong?

Don t bother with Argentina, waste of time and cash, that country is sinking in its bureaucratic mess. Take the bus and head directly to Chile, Paraguay or Bolivia, where you ll get something ridable fairly quickly for your 1500 USD. In Bolivia and Paraguay you can buy your driving licence, bikes registered in Paraguay can travel in all South America and in Py you don t need insurance.

+1 on what vortek said. Go to chile. Argentina is a nightmare of bureaucracy if you plan to buy legally and want to leave the country.

If you can take a bus to Santiago de Chile, you can buy my KLR650. The bike is perfect for traveling, I rode it down from Calgary. It has a Canadian registration, which makes it much easier for you to travel, you don´t have to deal with any paper work if we change the registration and title on your name, you are ready to go.
I bought the KLR brand new in October 2011, first registration Oct. 5th 2011, It´s got 29.000 km on the counter now and ist in perfect condition, ready to go with soft bags, rear rag, spare parts and tools.

Mika you know we are 50% right on this one here.Some degree of legality is needed.Of course flexibilty is good.
But if you organize that just with a minimum of responsabilty you ride more "tranquilo"
