Buying a bike in Chile - Selling in Uruguay?
 

Now then,
I'm thinking of buying a small bike -125cc or less, in Chile, travelling up through Argentina to Uruguay and hopefully selling/leaving it in Montevideo at the end of the trip. I'm thinking small, mainly as I'm only covered for small stuff on my license. Also would be easier to get parts etc if it was one of the more local bikes! I'm not over worried about reliability/ride etc.

Has anyone any advice with reagrds documentation for border crossings and wether its possible to import/export like this easily? What papers would I be likely to need?

I gather from a bit of research that 3rd party insurance will be necessary. How about an international license / IDP? I'm working in the Antarctic, so can't exactly pop down to the post office... I'll be trying to sort as much out as possible over t'internet.

FYI: buying in chile is easy and selling there (if you bought there) also.
however i am not sure about selling in other countries, am looking for this info myself.
In bolivia some guys told me it should be no issue.
I did not get the bike stamped into my passport in any country so far (Chile/Argentina/bolivia/peru) so i don't see how they would know when you leave ut it may be registered in their computer system - no idea.

PS: I have the bike in my name but from what i have researched, it wouldn't have been necessary. to buy the bike the owner (at a notary) signed full rights for the bike, including travelling anywhere in South America and selling the bike to anyone, over to me. This document should have been sufficient for travelling anywhere in S.Am. with it and selling it. However I wanted it in my name just in case it makes my life easier at borders.

Bike stamped in passport...
 

Encountered the first country which actually stamped the bike entry into my passport: VENEZUELA. It takes an entire page as well so hope you're not running short.

(Rest of the import / export aduana business was simple thought but you might have to be patient - not the fastest "do-ers" up here.)

From what i have heared not bringing a chilean bike back to chile is illegal and can couse trouble if you ever come back to chile with the same passport number. Not even talking about the import tax of the other country:
