Buying a car or Moto in Peru
I am curious to see if anyone knows how difficult it would be to buy a car, or a motorcycle in Peru? I am thinking of a long term move there. Any information on paperwork, and other logistics that come to mind would be very helpful!

edit: I am looking for information on cars and moto's already registered in Peru...

When you buy a used vehicle in Peru, you need to go to a notary public to officially transfer the title to your name. While in peru on a tourist visa, I actually tried to do this and was told that I needed a special stamp in my passport stating that I had permission to buy and sell property. I expect that in order to buy a new vehicle and get title in your name a notary would also be involved, though a dealer might do all the paperwork for you. Any notary that is up to date will make sure you have visa status that allows you to make these kinds of transactions.

I ended up transferring the title to my partner's name (she is peruvian), rather than try to change my immigration status.

Outside of the capital, vehicles are still regularly bought and sold using less rigorous procedures, some involving deliberate corruption and some resulting from ignorance regarding the latest regulations coming from Lima.

Thanks for the info. I think it might be best to buy a motorcycle, cheaper, dont have to pay tolls, ect.

buy sell Peru
I sold a costa rica registered motorcycle in Cajamarca Peru last year, to a dealer, no problem - had to go to notary and sign, and he paid impuesta on bike (I think 22%).........that easy.
i then bought another one there , had it registered in my name, able to leave country to Ecuador and back, no problem, then resold....again no problem.
no bribes, no nada. Nice blue placa..........
I needed no other info, no domicilio, no having to have a local sign for it, etc etc........picked up plates at dealer, I know others who have done the same including photoshopping title and changing name of owner and crosing borders.

You do need that to buy property, as in land or a building, but not a vehicle.

I bought a pick-up truck in Peru & converted it to a camper, its all registered in my name etc & was simple enough to do.

All happened at a notary & the burocracy sent a new registration document to me in the post.

If anyone's interested I'll be selling my truck (in Peru) in a couple of months time - a continent change beckons... :-)

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
