Buying a bike in Uruguay?

Hey I'm in the process of putting together a trip for March. Currently I'm thinking of flying to Buenos Aires and getting the ferry across to Montevideo to get a bike then riding across Argentina to Santiago then north to Peru, Ecuador and maybe Colombia.

Does anyone know if its possible to buy a bike in Uruguay and taking it out of the country? Are there any other issues that could crop up? Insurance/internation driving license (I have full UK motorbike license)

Any advice would be ace.

You will need an International Drivers License for all locations and insurance in Argentina for sure.
As for the ability to purchase in Urugury, I will get back to you on that.

I got some info from a friend living in Uruguay and he said it would be a headach for a non-resident to purchase a vehicle there.

Better to try to buy in Argentina.

Hello skiberdi,

what was your experience with buying a bike for your trip?
I want to go to Uruguay, Argentina and then Chile in April and also want to buy a bike there.

This thread is 7 years old, and the original poster hasn't posted anything since 2011, so I doubt you'll get a response. However, you might try looking at his profile and sending him a PM/email.

When you search on his profile for previous posts, you'll see these threads:

...so it looks like he did get to South America, bought an XT600, and had a bit of a tour before he sold it.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
