Boat Yucatan >> USA ?
I'm now in Mexico, and hope to spend 6 months or so here, before heading back to the states.

What I'd ideally like to do, is to ride from here in Baja, across the whole country, spend a bit of time in Guatemala and Belize, and then get a boat from somewhere in the Yucatan to somewhere in the States.

Does anyone know if this is possible?
Can you passenger it as well as ship bikes?
Costs and ferequency of sailings?

Possible but not very practical. In Progreso, the harbor for Merida there is a shipping company , name escapes me at the moment, right in downtown backing onto the causeway to the pier which runs several km into deeper water.
I asked there last year and they have a regular weekly container service to a Florida port. However the bike has to be crated and they do NOT transport passengers. Thus you will have to ship the bike and then fly yourself. Simplest and least costly remedy is to just ride back.

As far as I know, which is not very far, there isn't anyway to get from the Yucatan to the States by boat.
The last time I was in Veracruz I watched cars being driven on to a Ro-Ro but nobody could tell me where it was going and Veracruz is a long way from Yucatan.

I've heard tell there used to be Ferry service from the Yucatan to Miami. Been shut down for years now. Shame.

Are you planning on continuing your trip? Perhaps you could store your bike in Mexico, fly to USA, fly back when you're ready to continue travel? A good friend did this all through out Mex and Cent. America. 3 or 4 months of travel, return to US, six months later, fly back down and continue.

Just be aware of the import expiration of the bike. My buddy had to pay some fines for going over-due in Mexico. This was just a year ago.

Also, if you ride the Cuota roads you can make the US in 4 or 5 hard riding days. North of Mexico City goes very fast to the border on the Cuotas. Don't forget to turn in your Import paper work and get the document to prove you checked the bike out.

Cheers, I had suspected it might be this way, but you've got to ask these questions rather than assume eh?

I'm successfully making this trip more and more complicated, and due to these complications I need to get me and the bike (and the trailer) back into the States.
So looks like the long ride back north.

Cheers garrydymond, at best guess we might be in Mexico City in 6 to 7 weeks, but my guesses are rarely up to much when it comes to trip timing.
So see you then?

Mickey, the trailer's working out just fine, thanks. With the crazy rains a week or two ago, the road from Ensenada to San Felipe was washed away completely in a couple of places, which meant some challenging off road stuff.
From this I learned that while I love riding in the dirt, it's not really any fun on a big old BMW with a trailer, and certainly not with a pillion.
Not rocket science I guess, but from now we'll be altering the route/plans accordingly.
