Boat from Ushuaia to puerto montt

Hi,
I am currently under the rain in Iguazu, planning the rest of the trip. So did any one used the boat to go from puerto montt to ushuaia or other way ? (I have been told there is such a boat) What are the prices for us and the bikes ? How long does it take ?
We would probably go down south on the road and go up with the ferry.

Severin,

I caught that ship about 6 years ago in late Feb/March, Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales. The trip down the fijords past the glaciers is incredible, as well as the narrow passages you pass though. There were bikes on the ship..not mine unfortunately..The crossing of the Gulf de Penas was rough, the rest smooth...I hate ships. I can also recomend a Zodiac up the Rio Serrano to the Torres del Paine national park and the W hike. The refugeos are great places to stay in with beer, vino, and food but must be booked in town before you head into the park..which involves planning, not my hot point.

It remains one of my all time travel highlights along with the KKH in Pakistan.
cheers

My experience on that ride goes way way
back, to 1976. But its very similar to the
report posted before mine.

Back then it went from Punta Arenas, Chile, to Puerto Mont. Stopped at Chiloe
island. The trip took five days, one day spent floating while reparis were made to the WW ll era American made ship.

Very rough went out in open ocean, lots
on Barf in the isle ways. The Fiords were
just incredible. A fantastic trip. DO IT!

Back then the whole trip cost US $25 !!!

Think the boat you are refering to is the one that does Puerto Mont to Puerto Natales or vice versa. The company that run it is called Navimag. Used this boat in 2000.

Cost depends on type of accommodation selected - backpacker dorm rooms are the cheapest, but I recall still cost a couple of hundred bucks (all meals included for the trip). Bike costs extra - think about 50 bucks.

Rather than the boat why not ride the Carreterra Austral / Ruta 40 instead. The boat is great but the ride is much better!

Hello,
We are now on the very straight road from Resistensia to Salta. The temperature is going up, and the rain finally ended after 3 days.

For the boat, on my map I don't have much roads in the south of chile. I will do the roads of Argentina (n 40) when going south, so I did not wanted to make the same road twice.
And about the winds, are they going from north to south or south to north (depending of this, I could take the boat in on way or the other).
