HI CAN ANYONE RECCOMEND THE BEST TYRES TO PUT ON MY DR 650 FOR THE TRIP ?????

Hi Woody,

Depends what you are planning, hard core off road at every opportunity or the majority of asphalt with ruta 40 and the odd side trip.

Pirelli MT60s are what you will probably end up on if you buy tyres in South America, most of the tour companies use these them on there fleets of bikes, (BMW 800/1200 GS) they provide good asphalt manners with more than enough grip on gravel, only on wet muddy super slick pistes are they a little sketchy, they are relatively cheap and last quite well.

For a more hard core trip, use some Continental TKC 80s, Michelin T63s, Dunlop D606s, Pirelli MT21s or similar.

If you are planning doing over 10,000 kms consider putting a second set of tyres in your crate - and leave them somewhere that you will be returning to - Santiago/BA/RIO/Sao Paulo etc, sometimes you end up heading back through a big city.

Which tires for South America
We do travell SA in a HZJ78 for 6month now. We visited the center between Santiago - Buenos Aires, Uruguay, Paraguay and Bolivia.

I can't give you any particular advice on tires for bikes but from my experience in a car I'd say Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay are easy (except of Carretera Austral in CHI and some parts of Carretera 40 in ARG). Travelling is mostly on sealed roads. On sideroads in you find gravel but it's a kind of a "nice" gravel (no sharp edges).

Bolivia in contrary is very bad. We travelled the Altiplano from Villamontes to Tarija, Potosi, Sucre, Cochabamba, Oruro, Uyuni, Salar, Southwest Lagunas. Even in the "easy" southeast some friends which travelled with us had several punctures (Cooper A/T).
Ourselves we have BFgoodrich A/T with several extra layers on the side and on the thread. We never had a flat tire but the tires look terrible after Bolivia.
For the motorbike you might want to pay attention to have as much as possible layers in the carcasse and maybe carry some spare tires. (We only travelled Europe by bike)

Yeah its a good tyre, using some at the moment, not as smooth as a TKC 80 on asphalt, but at half the price.......

MT21's are easily found in Bolivia. Its a DOT knobby, more aggressive than the TKC's, and a heck of a lot cheaper. I ran them all through the altiplano routes without problem. It was very nice to have full knobbies on the routes I took.

Go for the Pirrelli MT-21's! ABSOLUTELY for your bike! They are made in Brazil and can be had all over SA at good prices (everything is cheaper in Bolivia, Santa Cruz is the moto capitol, and everything is more expensive in Brazil!).
