?Best Country(s) to buy/sell a bike in South America

Hey!:mchappy:
My plan is to fly from Vancouver Canada to somewhere in S. America, purchase one or two bikes then bomb around S.A. for 6 to 12 months. I figure something 150cc to 400cc dualsport/enduro like a Honda XL250, Yamaha XT...would do the job.
Best place to buy? Best place to sell?
Any Info is greatly appreciated!

P.S. I just returned from the Canada West HU meeting near Nelson, B.C. WOW! Great work Grant, Susan and all the presenters and helpers!:thumbup1:
I had a FAB time, and absolutely great information!
Thanks again all !

Best SA country to buy/sell

I vote for flying into Buenos Aires, buying new bikes, touring Argentina, selling bikes back to dealer, while still under factory warrenty.......if you want more info look up posts by xfiltrate in index, I have written up an accurate account of how to buy a new bike in Buenos Aires.

Also, HUBB's javkap of Dakar Motos web site is an excellent resource here in BA....he has many posts.

I purchased a Honda NX400 Falcon "duel purpose" in Buenos Aires and am quite happy after more than 12,000 K, four months and 5 South American countries (including Central Andes)..... Zero mechanical problems....works very well on cheap gas....parts available....

Elisa bought a Honda XR 250 Tornado, for same trip..... Zero mechanical problems..... parts very available and enough power to carry gear and still stay with traffic...both bikes light enough to pick up with full gear on board and the seat on the Falcon is excellent.

Elisa is very pleased with her 250 she bought NEW for $3,000.00 US dollars. Prices have gone up a little, but not much. The Falcon new, sells for around $4,000.00 US dollars. You can resell these bikes and walk with most of your investment.... Insurance, liability only is very inexpensive.

Deep sand, with full gear on board, was less problem for the NX400 and XR250 than with all heavier bikes I have ridden....knee deep rivers did not stop us, and the police, looking for tourist to bribe, generally don't hassle bikes with Argentine plates.... We live in BA and are willing to help. xfiltrate

Brazil is not the place to buy, so do not look here.
Here is an example from today newspaper list vehicle prices in Porto Alegre.
Honda NX4 Falcon = 6860.00 USD
BMW F650 = 21850.00 USD
BMW K1200 LT = 55055.00 USD

Hi,
Many thanks for the info!
This idea of mine may be workable, maybe not.
xfiltrate, I'll check your information and may have more questions.

chile is pretty good to buy

hey

I left the US to do what you want to do about a year ago ( man feels like yesterday) Anyway, I bought a Yamaha XT 600 in Chile for $4000 USD. You can then take it across the border to Argentina ( and only Argentina.... leanred this one the hard way....) Anyway, once you are in Argentina, you can go ANYWHERE. Buyin in Chile is pretty easy ( there a lot of posts on here) and then once you do pay for it and get the transferance papers you could leave the country the next day. The only thing you are eventually going to want is the registration for the bike. Have it sent to a friends house and I'm sure you can get it eventually. Other than that, you can PM or email me if you have more questions. Buying in Chile and then travelling all over the place is Absolutley doable. And in santiago there is a good selection of bikes to choose from. Take Care, good luck

:offtopic: Some years ago, while working in a stereo store, I was looking at the back of a Frank CD. I noticed a phone number under 'Barking Pumpkin Records' I said to the guys "hey there's a phone number on this CD...think I could call Frank and have a chat". The guys thought I was ridiculous. What the F%#@ so I called. Long story short...Frank wasn't in, he was in hospital battling prostrate cancer. The chap at Barking Pumpkin Records said that Frank usually answered the phone! He suggested that I call back in a week or two, Frank always liked to talk to fans. I missed out, he passed away. Damb. I miss his work.
I think of that from time to time and remind myself not to miss opportunities as they come up.

Thanks for the info on SA
