Beginner motorcycle driver in Chile and Argentina
 

Does anyone know if it is possible for me to drive my bike through Chile and Argentina (mostly Chile) after less than 1 year since i obtained my A license?

I'm concerned about this since I know that it would be better for me to have an international driving license ( but that can;t be issued if i'm still a beginner) . Thing is I missed my chance to take the exam this fall and now I have to wait until early spring. The other thing is that i cannot postpone the trip because it's supposed to be my honeymoon.
I have to mention that i have my B license for 5 years now, so i'm not really unacustomed to traffic.

care to give me some good news ........?

My belief is that any license will do. I never showed my international drivers license in Chile or Argentina, just my state of South Carolina license, which they were not too interested in, except maybe at the border. The police are much more interested in your vehicle permit (given at the border) and passport.

I had no problems when I arrived in Brazil two weeks after passing my bike test, buying a bike and setting off.

Well, no problems with the authorities... I still had a few problems actually knowing how to ride the damn thing! Luckily I had some wide open and empty roads to practise on!

Similar situation for me. I'm considering sitting a licence test when passing through California just to be sure...

i've now driven through 8 latin american countries and the only things cops seem to care about are importation documents for you bike and maybe your passport. you could show them a junior high school student card for all they care.

Driver licence in Chile
 

I was stopped last month while riding my KLR in southern Chile, but no problems. Chile is a little less fascist about motorcycle driving permits than the EU is. But I strongly recommend that you get at least one and preferably two international driving permits and never show your real license unless pressed for it. The reason is this -- if you are charged with a traffic offence, the carabineros will take your license and give you a receipt, and if it is a weekend you may have to hang around a couple of days before you can pay the fine and recover your licence.
