beer in ecuador
Hello boys and girls my name is Albert and I own the only Brewpub in Ecuador. All the ingredients are British and we do a Scottish heavy ale,an India pale ale,a stout which is better than the usual boring tat and a Czech style lager and to go with it a rare old variety of pub meals.
Oh and I also have a KTM950 Adventure and my shiny new Husqvarna 610 sm for playing the fool in town,I,ve been about a bit in Ecuador Colombia and Peru and in the last couple of months I,ve been visited by two Yamaha Diversions would you belive two BMW1150,s two BMW 1200,S and yesterday two Yamaha TTR600,s and I,ve helped a few get a hold of tyres and bits and bobs as I know the local bike shops and so on. So if you fancy a pint a bit of scoff or need a bit of advice or just want to make a lost Scotsman happy, drop by to THE TURTLES HEAD LA NIÑA 626 Y JUAN LEON MERA LA MARISCAL QUITO We,re one block from the hotel Marriot Hope to see you there!!! |
Albert,
I'll be heading that way on October 23rd with fellow HU member Bob Forsee, we'll look you up. Keep a cold one on ice for us! Harold |

I can vouch for the good beer and food but i never got to meet you Albert.Visited back in Octoberish last year on good advice from Dan.I think you were in Colombia.
Great place ! Simon |
As good as he says!
It was me and my woman on the TTR´s, top bloke, just got 2x new pirelli MT90s from Cuenca as promised and arranged by Albert. The guys at the KTM dealer were ace and let me use the workshop and tools to change the tyres, sprockets, chains and wheel bearings (which they got me a discount on).
Big thanks to Albert for the assistance and advice, the pub is a bit of an oasis for the aching assed british biker too. Good beer, warm fire and the feel of a real pub, ideal after lots of miles away from a real boozer! |
Hola Albert,
Again, thanks for the hospitality. Great bar and even better beer. For those passing thru, its a must stop. Nice atmosphere and great community. Plenty of places to stay in the immediate area. Also home of whats got to be one of the shinniest 950`s in South America....ha ha ha. The two Canucks on the 1200 GS´s |

La Mesilla crossing
Quote:
They must have seen someone else from Washington. I'm travelling solo. I was in Pelenque for a few days, then Comitan on Thursday and Friday. I crossed at Mesilla this a.m. - 15 minutes on the Mexico side to get stamped out and spend the last of my pesos, 15 minutes to get to the Guat border post, another 30 minutes to get proper paper. Cost me 12.40 Qetzals for the fumigation, 41Q for the bike import. Buy gas on the Mexico side. I'm hanging in Quetzaltenango for a bit, for some needed Spanish. Maybe I'll see you pass through? |
Best beer I´ve had since leaving the USA, but after drinking the piss water stuff all through Central America my abilty to handle the real thing seems to be compromised. A bit of sage advice: Never try to match drinks with an Irish lass in a British pub in Ecuador.
|
Great beer and company albert. A real british brew pub is a rare sight down here.
My SecaII is still running but i havent made it very far. I should be in Cuenca for another 6months / year teaching and ill defiantly be back Quito to buy you a beer. Jerome |

your pub sounds great...Id like to drop in one day!!How did you end up in Quito? that sounds interesting! |
How did I end up in Quito? that,s a long story, give me a couple days to think up a concise version of the strange story of an old despatcher or better still get down here and get the aural version and save me a load of one handed typing!!
|
Always Look On The Bright Side of Life
One handed typing? I don't want to know what you're doing with the other hand when online. Evening, Albert, how the hell is it? Still got the Blade and the Camaro? Found a space for that portrait? Bout time I came back down for another month or so of Llama Negra and ribs, I reckon.
Best Pub in Ecuador? No doubt. Top Ten in Latin America? Absolutely. The Turtle's Head makes a top Quito HQ - Bert knows his stuff and runs a great bar. Say 'hello fajer' to Roland if he's still around, will ya? Suerte, Dan Walsh |
I'll second that...
I managed to see Dan dance after a few ales at the Turtles head. Now that is worth paying money for - the beer is that good.
It is a superb pub. Albert is a gent - the atmosphere unique in that part of the world, you cannot go through Quito without a visit....or ten. I'm missing a decent pint large - not much around here. Good to hear from you here Albert, it brought back some good memories. |
looking forward to a cold one....
albert,
we've made it to nicaragua, costa rico tomorrow and so on and so on.....hope to be in quito by Nov 21st. we could use the the following help.... need a shipping address to get some parts sent to - anyway we can send them to you and you hold them for us? how bout a good 'value' place to stay in quito. we'll be there at least a week, and want to do the galapogos (sp?) islands as well. my choice will be a pint of your thickest, heaviest, blackest brew you have... hope to see you soon. mark |

albert,
just wanted to say thanks for the help in quito. from sites to see, roads south, great beers and a place to do an oil change, you came through with all. to those folks on the road who need some guidance while in quito, look albert up at the turtle's head. thanks again, mark and erin |
Don't be a fool!
do yourself a favor and hook up with albert while in quito. albert is the greatest and took time out of his day to call and then drive me to the tire shop for some much needed new rubber. if the food and beer isn't enough (and it is really good) that f-ing accent will be!

Good Man in Quito
Hey Folks,
We have spent some time in Quito on our way South to Argentina and Albert´s pub is a great place to relax and have a pint. I´d go as far as saying it is a must stop for any overland moto adventures while in Quito! And as far as the proprietor is concerned well what can I say, but that Albert is one of those individuals who make this riding lifestyle so much fun. Be sure to need some assistance while in town, tires oil whatever, he´s sure to help however he can and you might get to rip aroun town with him, trying to catch up to him on his SM is a gas! :scooter: GO!!!!!!! Albert MAXVERt |
Albert, Dick and I had a great time at the Turtle's Head. We would highly recommend your place as a wonderful stop along the way. The warm and quaint atmospere were only exceeded by the beauty of your good looking girls. I'm sorry you have it so tough every day!. (Dick, the girls, and Bo)

Free publicity
With all the free publicity, courtesy in the main, it would appear, of passing US citizens, that Albert is getting from our HUBB. Pehaps the least he could do is either take out an advert on our web site like other commercial concerns that view bikers as a potential source of income do so supporting HU or reduce the very high prices that he charges to passing HU members.
p.s. Remember if you want really good up to date info on SA in general, Ecuador in particular and you cannot meet up with a fellow biker heading the other way, Ricardo Rocco is the man to ask. Ride safe. |
Harumph
Maybe this guy should read the thread and then make a comment like this, all I,ve done since day one is try to help travellers on their way, this is a classic example of.Oh Jesus I don,t know If I,m pissing people of please tell me!!! As I,m close to becoming a millionaire on the 4 or 5 bikes passing through on a weekly basis
oh yes If the guys running the HUBB HEAR THAT I,M DOING THIS SITE A DISSERVICE LET ME KNOW |
Quote:
Albert also has a choice in whether he helps other bikers out who turn up at his pubs. He lead me around Quito looking for tyres that would suit my ride down through S.America. When we didn't find them he then kindly offered to call the main KTM dealer in Ecuador to help source the tyres for me. Sure, he runs a couple of businesses and probably does get a couple of bikers drop by thanks to this thread, but he's also a very likeable bloke who is willing to help fellow bikers and generally just chew the fat about bikes and Quito. In my books, there's nothing wrong with that. |
Chump
Quote:
everything, is´nt there. The cost of your time spent helping out HU travelers far out weighs the tupence you make in profit from the few beers we drink while visiting your establishment. We hope to see you again and if you get near Idaho you always have a place to stay. GO!!!!!!! MAX |
Turns
Thanks for your support gents and I,d like to remind you of an old Ecuadorian saying "no good turn goes unpunished" I,ll be ignoring that and trying to help people out where I can.
One more time many thanks |
Kin hell, Maja, lighten up. Despite his unhealthy fetish for rubber-masked SAS men, Albert's one of the good guys who's offered unconditional (though not unlimited) help to passing riders - not because he's a carpetbagger, but because he enjoys being around motorcyclists, enjoys playing host and I guess, enjoys being In The Know. He helps - and whether or not you drink, that's up to you.
I chose to drink. I spent 2 or 3 months hanging round the Turtle's Head back in 2004 - Bert let me (and half dozen more) park up for free, let me use the address for spares, let me use the phone to hassle customs when the spares disappeared, etc etc. To me, to Trys, to Colesy Boy, to Dick and Jane and a gang of other biking blow-throughs, he was double-helpful. Sure, we all ended up buying a few beers. Where's the harm? Why twist it into something unpleasant? Many HU Communites are based around businesses - Ricardo has a hotel, Cusco Jeff has a pub, Javier and Sandra in BA have DakarMotos. Parasitic? I reckon it's more symbiotic. A happy, Pan American reach-around. And I reckon most travellers who've met them would agree. Take no notice, Bert. Hopefully we'll talk shite over another pint of Llama Negra and another plate of ribs later this year. Suerte, Dan Walsh |
Geez Albert,
When I get there, you give me a mug, I'll give you a hug! Breathless in anticipation, no doubt. |
Papi
Ay Que Rico Papi !!!
Looking forward to it,but I,ll just let you hug Alejandra my mini waitress from Medellin!!! |
Apologies for not responding sooner, but the internet tends to be a once a week or so thing for me.
In the fraternity of moto travellers, one thing really stands out, the willingness, I assume of all of us, to help out each other with no thought of reward or gain for self, indeed this may be considered one of the basic premises along with the need to regard all coach and truck drivers in Latin America as suicidal maniacs which ensure enjoyable and safe travelling. Let me first say, at risk of stating the obvious, this web site costs money to run. Some travellers, like those with the tag "contributing member" donate money annually, a voluntary donation, to give some extra financial support to the HU web site which makes such a big contribution to making our trips more successful and good though it is I am sure that with more financial support, the site could become even better and my position on this is, "support your local web site (financially)". I would think that just about everyone who knows me would agree on one thing, I am a firm believer that the individual should be allowed to drink what they want, when they want and where they want as long as it dosn´t scare the horses. On reviewing my original post I find that I have said nothing to detract from that and my comment on the price of drinks in that particular pub was just a case of presenting a fact, not an opinion, they are expensive, but as drinking there is not compulsory, may I refer you to the statement above. Dan gives examples of other commercial concerns in South America which are biker related and I, like many others, have practical experience of them and have been appreciative of the assistance and information offered moto traveller to moto traveller. My point was though, non of those mentioned have utilised the HUBB to such a degree as, for whatever reason, "Beer in Quito". Usually, it would appear, after an initial contact via the HUBB, most go to private e-mailing. So, for expressing an opinion, which I presume I am entitled to do, I have been shouted at in an e-mail by Albert, but he is from the west coast and as a fellow Scot I am aware that they do that sort of thing over there. However, being called called "a chump with a problem about everything" by Max, someone whose total knowledge of me as far as I am aware would appear to come from his missinterpretation of something that I wrote on the HUBB, would seem to be a bit over the top. Whoops, sorry, I see from his address that he is a citizen of the US and I am aware that they do that sort of thing over there. (see Bush.G.W. US Pres.W.M.D.) By the way Max the apostrophe goes between the "n" and the "t" in isn´t, but if english isn´t your first language please ignore the grammer lesson. To finish then, what can I do but repeat or possibly paraphrase what some person once said, "I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the last your right to say it". It´s what we in the UK call freedom of expression. Ride safe and once more, Support your local website(financially) |
I can't help but feel a little disappointed in the way that this thread has started to turn out. Normally I quite willing to live and let live, however I do strongly feel that the needlessly negative and derogatory comments in the above few posts need to be addressed.
May I draw the attention of all to the rules of the bulletin board and generally to those of civilised behavior: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/faq.php?faq=vb_board_usage#faq_new_faq_item Basically, no slagging people off for where they come from or use of directly abusive terms. I don't think that's to much to ask for is it? If we're going to get pedantic, may I point out that "dosn't" is actually spelt doesn't. Not that I'm an expert at grammar or anything (far from it). I point it out however to demonstrate that in even most seemingly perfect of emails, you can near enough always find a mistake. So anyway...what was the problem with this "Beer in Quito" thread? Ah screw this for a lark, I'm going to the pub.... |

Hey Mike or Maja if you can't afford Albert’s beer don't go there. You don't have to try to educate others with your negative opinions. Beside, the activity about Albert’s treat talks for itself and is already a nice and positive support. Don't get jealous. Your large comment again is even more awful as the first one. Incredible, how much time someone can spend to contribute just negatives and try to look important.:rolleyes2: (I do not know Albert, never have being in Equator, I'm not partner in Albert’s business and I really hate beer. I hope that we will have no more of these type of comments. I will stop as well and in case you need more of it, just read this one again and again... ) |
what the?!?!?
i'm not sure who p!ssed in mike's cornflakes, but i'm hoping it is just a misunderstanding. that misunderstanding being that it is far more than just info on the roads that I think albert is providing. i know for us, needing to do a 6,000 mile service on the bikes, wanting to do the work ourselves and not having a place to do, albert meeting us at the turtles head and hanging out for the a few hours while we turned wrenches was a big help. and i know he took nickdude around quito to find a deal on tires...seems like he's helped a few other folks to....
albert......don't sweat it and for future traveler's sake, keep the light on for us. mark and erin kirkendall |
thanks again.
Damn you Albert! i can't believe i let you take me all over Quito looking for tyres. and all those phone calls you made for me as well! you money-hungry thief! oh, wait, you didn't charge me a thing, and i didn't buy a single beer. shucks!

Canon del Pato - Waypoints
Albert - I actually managed to miss CDP turnoffs both on the Pan-Am and afterwards - I remember you weren't sure where exactly the turnoff was near Chimbote.
So, this may be useful to Mark and others: Turn off from the Pan-Am is at S8° 59.073' W78° 37.023' (through Santa). Also, after heading towards the CDP, I missed another turning! I followed the tarmac on a very winding (but spectacular) cul-de-sac of nearly 70 miles each way to a remote village (Huandoval?), when I should have turned right on the dirt road at S8° 39.516' W78° 14.025' to Huallanca. I had a feeling I'd gone wrong, and kept asking people, who assured me I was on the right track! Either my Spanish was way too bad, or pronounciation of Huallanca was getting confused with Huandoval. BTW the road SW from Loja to the border crossing at Mancara was spectacular. My trip's now complete - flying home from BA this evening, bike's already gone. |
Ay Caramba
Well done mate!! Hope the hangover wasn,t to bad after your night down the pub!!

Dragged Screaming
I,m bringing this old thread back from the dead so that the latest crop of bikery types can find their way to this old wateringhole in Ecuador and invite comments from all the guys I,ve been cynicly exploiting since the last time we saw this on the Latin America front page.
It also gives me a chance to thank all the folks who did drop in for the pleasure of their company and sorry to all those I missed due to work commitments Thanks again to all of you!!! Safe Driving Albert theturtleshead |
Hi Albert!
I had an absolutely awesome time at your pub. I arrived fresh from Colombia, dirty, wet, hungry, exhausted- and your girls took care of me, just right. Ah- the fireplace, the beer, the fish&chips, and of course the friends I made there. It was actually a highlight of the ride. Nothing compares to crossing the equator for the first time, then getting blitzed on good beer! BTW, we're having a little rally in South Dakota, for as many North American-based Latin America riders. Details are in dispute. Your input would be apreciated (but probably ignored, unless we could get you to come?) Thanks again. Max |
Cool
Anything I can do to help let me know and if you can find anyone daft enough to lend me a fun bike and it,ll have to be after the 10th of August as one of my staff is getting married and I,m the MC at the wedding.
I,d love to come, sounds like a hoot, but you know me I,ll probably get arrested for my lane'splitting antics!!! Albert theturtleshead |
