Well Albert there is always some chump out there with a problem about
everything, is´nt there. The cost of your time spent helping out HU travelers
far out weighs the tupence you make in profit from the few beers we drink
while visiting your establishment. We hope to see you again and if you
get near Idaho you always have a place to stay.

Kin hell, Maja, lighten up. Despite his unhealthy fetish for rubber-masked SAS men, Albert's one of the good guys who's offered unconditional (though not unlimited) help to passing riders - not because he's a carpetbagger, but because he enjoys being around motorcyclists, enjoys playing host and I guess, enjoys being In The Know. He helps - and whether or not you drink, that's up to you.

I chose to drink. I spent 2 or 3 months hanging round the Turtle's Head back in 2004 - Bert let me (and half dozen more) park up for free, let me use the address for spares, let me use the phone to hassle customs when the spares disappeared, etc etc. To me, to Trys, to Colesy Boy, to Dick and Jane and a gang of other biking blow-throughs, he was double-helpful. Sure, we all ended up buying a few beers. Where's the harm? Why twist it into something unpleasant?

Many HU Communites are based around businesses - Ricardo has a hotel, Cusco Jeff has a pub, Javier and Sandra in BA have DakarMotos. Parasitic? I reckon it's more symbiotic. A happy, Pan American reach-around. And I reckon most travellers who've met them would agree.

Take no notice, Bert. Hopefully we'll talk shite over another pint of Llama Negra and another plate of ribs later this year.

Apologies for not responding sooner, but the internet tends to be a once a week or so thing for me.

In the fraternity of moto travellers, one thing really stands out, the willingness, I assume of all of us, to help out each other with no thought of reward or gain for self, indeed this may be considered one of the basic premises along with the need to regard all coach and truck drivers in Latin America as suicidal maniacs which ensure enjoyable and safe travelling.

Let me first say, at risk of stating the obvious, this web site costs money to run. Some travellers, like those with the tag "contributing member" donate money annually, a voluntary donation, to give some extra financial support to the HU web site which makes such a big contribution to making our trips more successful and good though it is I am sure that with more financial support, the site could become even better and my position on this is, "support your local web site (financially)".

I would think that just about everyone who knows me would agree on one thing, I am a firm believer that the individual should be allowed to drink what they want, when they want and where they want as long as it dosn´t scare the horses. On reviewing my original post I find that I have said nothing to detract from that and my comment on the price of drinks in that particular pub was just a case of presenting a fact, not an opinion, they are expensive, but as drinking there is not compulsory, may I refer you to the statement above.

Dan gives examples of other commercial concerns in South America which are biker related and I, like many others, have practical experience of them and have been appreciative of the assistance and information offered moto traveller to moto traveller. My point was though, non of those mentioned have utilised the HUBB to such a degree as, for whatever reason, "Beer in Quito". Usually, it would appear, after an initial contact via the HUBB, most go to private e-mailing.

So, for expressing an opinion, which I presume I am entitled to do, I have been shouted at in an e-mail by Albert, but he is from the west coast and as a fellow Scot I am aware that they do that sort of thing over there. However, being called called "a chump with a problem about everything" by Max, someone whose total knowledge of me as far as I am aware would appear to come from his missinterpretation of something that I wrote on the HUBB, would seem to be a bit over the top. Whoops, sorry, I see from his address that he is a citizen of the US and I am aware that they do that sort of thing over there. (see Bush.G.W. US Pres.W.M.D.) By the way Max the apostrophe goes between the "n" and the "t" in isn´t, but if english isn´t your first language please ignore the grammer lesson.

To finish then, what can I do but repeat or possibly paraphrase what some person once said, "I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the last your right to say it". It´s what we in the UK call freedom of expression.

I can't help but feel a little disappointed in the way that this thread has started to turn out. Normally I quite willing to live and let live, however I do strongly feel that the needlessly negative and derogatory comments in the above few posts need to be addressed.

Basically, no slagging people off for where they come from or use of directly abusive terms. I don't think that's to much to ask for is it?

If we're going to get pedantic, may I point out that "dosn't" is actually spelt doesn't. Not that I'm an expert at grammar or anything (far from it). I point it out however to demonstrate that in even most seemingly perfect of emails, you can near enough always find a mistake.

So anyway...what was the problem with this "Beer in Quito" thread? Ah screw this for a lark, I'm going to the pub....

Might I suggest one that combines beer, women, motorcycles & a good curry / ;-)

if you can't afford Albert’s beer don't go there. You don't have to try to educate others with your negative opinions.
Beside, the activity about Albert’s treat talks for itself and is already a nice and positive support. Don't get jealous.
Your large comment again is even more awful as the first one. Incredible, how much time someone can spend to contribute just negatives and try to look important.:rolleyes2:

i'm not sure who p!ssed in mike's cornflakes, but i'm hoping it is just a misunderstanding. that misunderstanding being that it is far more than just info on the roads that I think albert is providing. i know for us, needing to do a 6,000 mile service on the bikes, wanting to do the work ourselves and not having a place to do, albert meeting us at the turtles head and hanging out for the a few hours while we turned wrenches was a big help. and i know he took nickdude around quito to find a deal on tires...seems like he's helped a few other folks to....

albert......don't sweat it and for future traveler's sake, keep the light on for us.
