Argentina to Bolívia Border crossing

North Argentina at the moment and planning to cross to Bolívia heading to Uyuni, does anybody can tell what's the best place to cross, Villazon or Yacuiba??? I know the roads from Villamontes to Tarija are quite bad, so if I cross from Yacuiba I believe I would get that bad part again.
Can anyone tell me how's the way at the moment from Villazon to Uyuni??? or any other routes to Uyuni considering the starting point is Salta/Argentina.

Also hearing that some bikers have been robbbed in Bolivia, never had any probs at all, apart from the police officers in Argentina, but it would be good any reports from someone who noticed something different.

Cheers

Just came thru Yacuiba about 2 weeks ago and would avoid it if at all possible - long, slow, painful crossing with some greasy characters. Another rider with us at the time recommended Bermejo, a smaller crossing that will get you to Tarija.

We were in Bolivia for 4-5 weeks and felt as safe as anywhere else.

Enjoy!

Salta to Villazon very beautiful and good tarmac road, Villazon - Tupiza (surroundings worth a visit) - Potosi - Uyuni great scenery and a perfect tarmac road.
You will have to pay toll ( 5 and 7 Bolivianos or so)

I did the Villazon border crossing earlier this year and it was fine. It's gets busy so try getting there early.

Villazon to Tupiza is good tarred road
Tupiza to Uyuni is ripio

Villazon to Uyuni via Potosi should be tarred the whole way now. Great road actually

Enjoy

border crossing

thank's for the info guys, just got back from the trip to machu picchu and crossed through villazon and had no problems, just the normal waiting time to get through and my friends didn't have the "cARTA VERDE", nothing that 20 dollars given with the documents wouldn't solve.

thank's for the info guys, this web site really rocks

just remember, that motorcycles DON'T pay for roads in Bolivia!

Sometimes it's hard, especially when a guy in police uniform is telling you to pay and is giving you the ticket. After we got the info from another 'honest' policeman we never stopped on any toll-gate and nobody never stopped us.
Before and after Copacabana police also wanted to charge us for 'entering a border zone'...

But despite, Bolivia is definitely worth visiting!
