Any questions about Peru?? may have answers...

Hello, I have travelled many times to Peru (Peruvian wife). So if you may have questions, I may have answers or can consult with wife too (she really does know just about everything). One interesting fact for travellers there on bikes.... It is law in Peru for police not to disturb or harrass travellers driving there. As tourist greatly support their economy. They may still pull you over and try to bug you for a tip. But if you know a little Spanish, let them know you know about this law. Chow!

The most beautiful beaches in Peru are in the North. Mancora is very popular. There are many hotels, good food, surfing. It is warm there pretty much all the time. I have been there a few times and even in the off season (their winter) actually about two weeks ago, and it was still 25'c to 30'c every day. If you go a little south of the town of Mancora, there is even more hotels. Accessable by moto taxi. Only problem further south is lack of restauants, and a little more expensive. There are also resort style hotels there if you wish. "Punta Sal" is excellent! I have been there three times, and have not been dissapointed. Food is included in your day price and is excellent. If you go to Mancora, you will probably want to fly there, about an hour flight. You will have to fly to Tumbes or Piura. Mancora is only about an hour by kombi or taxi from Tumbes. If you fly to Piura, it is 3hrs by Kombi.

There are beaches south of Lima too, but less attractive. Paracas is okay but colder, and less options for restaurants or hotels. But has the tours for Billestas Islands.

Of course there are many smaller beaches all the way north and south of Lima. I have visited a couple south, but they were nothing special. Cold, dirty, etc. Not post card quality...

Time of year?

Mancora is great year round. I have a expat friend from childhood with a nice hotel on the beach just south of town. I could recommend you for a discount price....

There are many decent beaches around Lima and south, but only December to May. The water is always a bit chilly, but if the sun is warm it makes it seem less so.

I love the surf and the food 131km south of Lima at Cerro Azul. If you are going past there, don't miss it! It is even recommended by the Beach Boys! Stay at Hostal Cerro Azul right on the beach near all the great restaurants!

July thru Oct all the coastline south of Lima is foggy and coldish.

I have lived 30 years IN Peru... 20 of it on a motorcycle... I also would be glad to answer any questions.

Cheers! Toby (charapa)

Thank you for the offer of information!

Any suggestions for riding routes off the beaten track? I am on a KLR650 packed light and use it when I can to get to amazing and remote locations.

Any good hostels to sit and relax at for a few days after a hard ride? Preferably locations away from main tourist routes/locations, but with good scenery/food/wifi/etc.

Any towns or areas that are worth stopping at and exploring in detail for a few days or weeks that I might normally pass by?

I think Charapashanperu may be better informed to answer your questions... My travels in Peru so far have been limited to wifes toyota corrolla... Intend on getting my klr there next spring. One area i really enjoyed was Cajamarca, it may not be high on the tourist list, but a nice city in the foothills, the road in begs for motorcycles. Natural hot springs, many historic sites, good fresh eats near the "banos del inca". But there have been a few "paros" there in the last year. They block the roads and threaten to burn you and your car down if you try to pass... they are protesting a mining company who wants to mine for gold in the only lake they have suppling fresh water to the city.

I did enjoy Cajamarca and highly recommend it to anyone passing through. I saw no sign of the problems you describe with the "paros".

Love Cajamarca!

Where did you stay in Cajamarca? Did you go on to Chachapoyas? Where are you headed now?

I'm a Honda XR650L rider who prefers gravel. I have about 30,000 Peru kms under my belt. What do you want to know?

OOPS, I was confusing city names. Sorry, I've been sick the past few days (flu) and confused places I've been when I wrote that previous post.

Cajamarca. Interesting city for a brief visit, but I could not find any good places to stay. The best I could find after a lot of searching was Hostal Tejas (I think?) which has good parking at a good price (S25), but horrible rooms and very unfriendly staff. Next best places I could find was almost three times the cost.

Chachapoyas is the city I was thinking of. Great place, lots to explore nearby. I stayed in Hotel Kuelap. I am now in Huamachuco deciding where to go next. Possibly to the coast briefly. Possibly south through the mountains along dirt roads listed on my map, if I can find them. Possibly even still leaving today (I'm not good at planning ahead ).

My first post pretty much says it all in what I am looking for. Good places to explore on a KLR650 away from the tourist routes, preferably dirt roads. Places that are good to explore in depth. Good places to sit and relax.

Hi,

I'm flying into Lima early September and I'm looking for a bike (KLR or similar) for a a week or two - any suggestions?

Also, suggestions about where to ride? Nothing too crazy since we'll be two on the bike.

Tough in Lima

Your going to have difficulty renting anything out of Lima. The rental companies are in Cuzco (MotoTousrPeru) and Arequipa (PeruMotors). A KLR will go for about $95/day w/ 200 km. Alex at MotoToursPeru will send a bike to Lima for $250, but Lima is a pain to start and end a trip from.. I'd go up to Cuzco...

It's the best time of the year for riding in the Andes. How many days do you have and what are you interested in seeing?

I rode my KLR from California to Cuzco in 2008 so I'm at least a little bit familiar with the road from Lima to Cuzco through Nazca. In fact, that KLR and my buddy's KLR are somewhere in the region still

I'm going with my girlfriend this time so I'd like to do some 2-up adventure riding that isn't too tough. She haven't been to machu picchu so that's a must but we don't necessarily have to ride the bike up there - it would be fun though

Cuzco sounds like a great starting point. We have about a week for motorcycle fun so any fun parts in that region?

How is Manu? Is it accessible by road? Would it be a good idea to go in to do some rafting / zip lining or would you suggest a guided tour?

Any other bikes that are easier to get / more common / cheaper?
