another question regarding buying in Argentina

Hi

Long time forum read first time poster - great site read it daily!!!

I am currently living in London and finally convinced my girlfriend that we need to go to south America - we are taking a year off and going to drive (I couldn't swing the bikes but still trying) around the whole coast surfing and sleeping in the car [another reason no bikes ]. planning on getting a toyota 4 runner or Nissan pathfinder at the moment.

I have a question regarding buying the jeep- I am a kiwi but my girlfriends dad is Argentine and lives in BA but my girlfriend doesn't have a DNI or any Argentine documentation as she was born in Canada and has never done the paper work - apparently to get a DNI it takes over a year and we are planning on arriving to BA Dec 04th. we have started applying but it is not looking good to get it before we arrive or anytime soon.

I see the post on this forum about buying co-owner with a Argentine so i figure my Girlfriend can do this with her dad but does he have to come to the border with us??? we are planning on going to the very bottom of SA and crossing in and out of Chile multiple times. Is a signed letter and phone number plus same last name of daughter going to be enough to get through?? or will we still get classed as foreigners?? we then want to travel anti clockwise around the whole of south america.

If the above solution is not going to work I guess we will fly to Chile and get a 4x4 there instead as it looks much easier... anyone have any information around differences in cost/quality between Chile and Argentina for 4x4s?

cheers for reading

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
