German motorcycle tourist killed by landmine in Myanmar

According to a local volunteer rescue group that responded to the incident, the two were travelling by motorcycle between Pan Nyaung Village and Kun Hauk Village about 25 kms west of Hsipaw Township. The road between the villages is so bumpy that the woman was forced to get off the bike and walk behind it. She was following on foot when the motorbike struck the landmine at about 5 p.m.

Hi Mika

Sad story….

She is Argentinean, on this arg news web are both names:

I read somewhere else that some German diplomatic was travelling to the area to help with both.

As an aside comment, not really sure if he was a moto-traveller or an occasional tourist renting a bike…

Saludos

I suspect the latter, but it's still one we should be aware of if travelling in that area.

It is kind of cliche, but if you had to go out, that doesn't look like the worst way. I mean riding trails with your good looking Argentinian girlfriend.

I didn't know that Myanmar is the only country where landmines are still used today. It sounds like they may have been riding in a restricted area.

I think that is exactly correct. The area up near Shan state is a conflict area.

I lived in Burma for a year back in 1991, and flew all over the country (I was working as an aircraft pilot). I never heard anyone mention landmines, and I didn't have any concern about them myself. I wasn't exactly naive about mines, having just spent the previous 2 years in Angola, where the damn things are everywhere and I ran over mines twice whilst taxiing the aircraft.
