when to western Africa?

Hi there,

I'm planning to travel by 4wd to Marocco, Mauritania and Mali. What will be the best period of time to undertake this stroll through the sand?
Will 2 1/2 month be a good amount of time or defintely too short?

hope to hear from you soon.

with a smile,

Roland

Hi,

We went in june, july 2003 through Morocco and Mauritania (see www.hansrossel.com/africa ) and the inner country of Mauritania was really too hot (48°C) in that period, it was not inviting to go on a camel ride with that heat. On the other hand the coast (Nouadhibou to Nouackchott and thus also Banc D'Arquin) was very windy and about 27°C so no problem if you would move on via this way to Senegal.

It seems most overlanders pass the border between Morocco and Mauritania between October and March (border guards quoted 10-20 cars a day, in summer there was only one car a day). You can also expect that Chinguetti gets very touristy then because of the 3 charter flights a week to Atar from France (Point-Afrique).

Good luck with your trip,

Hans
