Thank you for the great pictures! I especially liked the one where cars drive off the ferry and disappear down the dusty brown road with half-dry palm trees. Makes you imagine what it's like beyond these trees, in the unknown Sudan - and instantly a new great travel dream begins to take shape.

Do you have a report on this trip (in English) posted somewhere on the web, by chance? Would be interesting to hear how things are in Sudan now. I was planning to go there a few years back, but then it all seemed very difficult and the plan never went ahead.

sorry to say that there is no other report on my last trip but the one in german mentioned above. I was 2002/03/04 in Sudan, Northern Part, mainly in the Libyan Desert and last December/January on a journey along the Nile and through the Bayuda Desert.

Do you know "Sudan - the Bradt Travel Guide"? the first edition was printed in 2005 and the 2007 edition it is not up to date either. Things have changed a lot in the last years and in 2010 the road between Wadi Halfa and Khartum should be entirely tarred! In the meantime the pistes from Merowe to Atbara, from Dongola to Khartum and from Dongola to Merowe are tarred. There are only a few km between Dongola and Merowe where you must drive offroad, because its crowded with caterpillars and lorries.
In Merowe you can even cross the Nile now on a bridge and in Atbara there will be soon another one too. I am a little bit sad about that because I liked very much the old Nile-Ferry-Life.

I just can encourage you to travel there - its a wonderful country with absolut charming people!

That's fine, I managed to read most of your German-language comments in the Sudan posts. I am just at the initial stage of the planning now, so haven't found any guidebooks yet. If I go it will be next winter. At the moment I'm busy locating all those places on the maps and reading whatever literature available in Russian on Sudan. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

Yes Ursula, that is a 'real' crocodile:(. Thanks once again for your inspirational photos. It sounds like Sudan needs to be visited soon before they
'pave paradise'. Just need to steel myself to deal with Egypts nightmare
borders.

Off Tarmac diversion in Sudan

If you are bored of the new tarred road down the nile then try visiting the Naqara temples South-West of the Meroe pyramid site. (the pyramids are unfortunately now behind an oil pipeline - incredible they just ran the pipeline directly in front of a monument like that, but that's Sudan...

The temple is reached by turning South off the tarred road - there doesn't seem to be a real piste, just head out into the sand following the GPS and you'll get there - there are various car tracks, but each driver seems to have their own route. The temple is at N16. 16' 07" - E33. 16' 35" - you can see it on Google Earth. There is also a deep well - 100m deep, which presumably supplied the temple and now supplies the local goats. Well worth the drive down from the tarmac, and it will probably be just you and a couple of goatherds there.
