Exclamation Tunisia-Libya-Sudan-Ethiopia

Also placed in Route Planning but getting too far there:

Am about complete west coast of Africa, SA-Morocco, and am keen to continue 'round and down the east coast. However, must give Egypt a miss due to prohibitive vehicle import restrictions (I am driving an old Land Rover - hope that doesn't deter your assisting, but this is the best site for overlanding info ...).

Anyone on here have any experience entering into Tunisia (to clarify: I will be taking the ferry out of Morocco to get to Tunisia, not driving across Algeria) then crossing Libya into Sudan (northern) and then Ethiopia (northern but not Eritrea) as a viable alternate route?

Specifics (especially ferry companies/ports and exact border crossing points for each country - and any/all else) greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Glen

Hi Glen,

Egypt ... prohibitive vehicle import restrictions

It's less bad than it could be as your vehicle is old and presumably low value.
As you will see, it's actually your only choice and you will need a carnet for Sudan, etc anyway.

Crossing from Libya into Sudan is not possible (see 2nd link below). In Libya escorted overland tourists can only enter top left (Tunisia) and leave top right (Egypt).

Have a look here and here

Regarding ferries: Morocco to Spain is easy - up to every 30 mins from several ports. From France or Italy to Tunis is fairly expensive 24-hr crossing every couple of days. 20% cheaper from Genoa than Marseille. Tunis port entry is no drama if you have several African borders under your belt.
You may want to try and investigate an escort-free transit via for Libya. I think someone here got one in Tunis after only 3 weeks wait.

fyi: 'cross-posting' (same question on 2 forums) is considered bad form. Better delete the other one. This is the right forum for your enquiry.

Hi Chris,

Thank you very much for the informative reply, much appreciated (even if the bearer of bad news ...). Unfortunately, I'd admitted defeat and reached the same conclusion today as well, have been unable to find any info anywhere that supported such a route. Bugger, Egypt it'll have to be then ...

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Glen

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
