Water and fuel amount

If you have to choose between 220L diesel + 120L water or 240L diesel + 100L water for 2 people in Niger, Chad and Sudan, what would you go for? We have to decide if we take 5 diesel jerry cans and 6 jerry cans with water or vise versa. We will be in the area around january to march (re. heat/water usage).

My personal opinion would be to take more fuel, less water. In winter/spring using water sparingly 5 litres per day is more than enough for one person, so 100 litres will last 10 days. You will find water much more frequently along your intended route. On the other hand 240 litres of fuel will only last 1200-1500 kilometres, and wherever you find fuel you will also find water, but not vice versa !

I strongly agree with Andrasz. It's also easier, and safer to carry extra water inside the cab if needed. Ultimately you have to figure out more or less the distance between refueling points on your chosen track and calculate your estimated fuel consumption. Naturally you’ll need a lot more fuel in the sand. Sometimes 3 times as much depends on how difficult the terrain is.

I would go as far as convert the water tank into a fuel tank and carry my water inside the car. But that’s me.

You won’t get far if you’re dehydrated, but you won’t get anywhere without fuel.
